Student Cars

Hello all, my daughter and I thought you would be the ideal people to ask about a car for her at Uni. She doesn't have ncb and she's just 20yrs. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm a student and I currently have a corsa.

They're great little cars, I have a 52 plate 1.2 16V CLUB. Its very reliable, doesn't use an awful lot of petrol, cheap to insure (1st year insurance, 18 years old, no ncb, £600, this was with diamond and I WOULD NOT recommend them, now with tesco) and relatively cheap to buy.

    I love my little car!!!

I have a P Reg Punto 55s which I bought in my second year, and I had no NCB when I first got it, Insurance was £550 fully comp inc legal, breakdown etc through Tesco Insurance too. Im now with Norwich Union Quote Me Happy, and its £320 TPFT with 1 yr NCB. My car is awesome too! Ive had a few minor problems (my own fault - a parking incident which has left it with a nice dent, and a break in which left my lock a bit dodgy) and 1 Slightly big problem (head gasket - apparently typical in older Punto's and worth replacing at about 45000miles anyway - But I didnt know this until after it blew and had to be sorted to the cost of £280)

Anyway, problems aside, they are quite cool, easy to fix by yourself, not sure about mpg, but i know i dont have to fill up all that often, its a 1.1i but is quite quick with no modifications, and easy to get parts for. I will be relacing mine in October, but only for a brand new punto sporting!

Dont know if that helps, and Im not sure how much you intend to spend, but mine was about £1000 in april 2003, and its still going after ive been driving it! You need strong arms though, it doesnt have power steering, but Ive not found it to be a problem.

Are these insurance prices you're quoting as you being a second driver with the car insured in your parent's name? I'm guessing gemma is female which probably helps, but I've been considering buying a car before the start of next academic year, and after extensive searching the cheapest insurance quote seems to be about £1100 plus (for a 2002 3dr 1.0l Vauxhall Corsa Club), or £1300 plus (for a 2002 3dr 1.25l Ford Fiesta Freestyle). I'm male, currently 19 years old (nearly 20), have had a full licence for 2 years but no NCB.

 as to why you're getting such low quotes?

edit: these quotes were comprehensive cover.

Hi, I'd be interested to know about quotes as well. We've just been getting a few for my son who's 18 this month & passed his test 6 months ago. At the moment he's on my insurance, all the quotes we've got for R reg fiesta 1.3 have been around £1450 for tpft which we simply can't afford and is probably all the car is worth anyway

Fiesta's and Corsa's were extremelly expensive when i looked into insurance, even under 1.4 litre engines. Ended up going for a 1.6 Seat Ibiza as the insurance was loads cheaper! (the 1.6 was cheaper than the 1.4 Seat Ibiza... figure that out ) anyway do some insurance quotes on https://www.confused.com they will give you a good idea (you can get car details from ebay to do test quotes on). So my recommendation would be look at Seat's, they may not look the best but they are damn cheap on insurance!

    Good luck

I got a Pug 106 last year, 1.1 ltr engine. I passed my test bla bla and did pass pluss, even with that my insurance was £1140, no NCB or anything, and that was Third Party Only! Way high, iv had an SP30 (speeding ticket) since then, shows how i concentrate, and my renewal cost is about £600 TPFT. My reccomendation is, stick with it for the first year, be carefull and dont go on a parents insurance. Start getting no claims its worth it. Also look for bonus builders, they give you 1 years NCB in 10 months. Try and play the insurance companies against each other, it will get you loadsa saving. I found Direct Line and First Alternative really cheap. Have fun at uni, i think im gonna train it all the time. Hope this has helped.

I had held my licence for 2yrs and 3months when I got the £550 fully comp quote. I was 23. And old Punto's are in a really low insurance group. Thats why mine is cheap! And ive definately found endesleigh, and quotemehappy.co.uk to be the cheapest for insurance by far.

I'm with https://www.elephant.co.uk & they seem very cheaper for younger drivers - I'm 23 and last year had no NCB but got a quote for £400 on my ford ka 1.3, nearest to that was £800!

Remember to always add an older person as an additional driver (knocks a fair sum off ;))

Very good point Darren21! You just reminded me - I recently got a few quotes for a toyota mr2 (in my dreams of course!) and adding my boyf who has been driving for 7 years reduced my premium by over £200, even though he has no ncb's because his parents insure his car under thier names and he is an additional driver. Im guessing my quote would get lower even further if my parents were on the policy as an additional driver.
