Last week was doing some laps of Regents Park and afterwards popped into the Sainsbury's in Camden Town for some water. To my surprise the there are individual cameras on each of the self service checkout filming you with an LCD screen so you can see yourself.

It's there to reduce theft. People are less likely to cheat the system if they can see that they are being watched.

Not cctv, but Mr S hired a van when we were helping my sister to move house. After completing the paperwork, the clerk bobbed down behind the counter - and then shot up like a jack-in-the-box with a camera in his hands and took a pic of Mr S.

Seems that was in case he used the van to 'ram-raid'.
  • Have never had any problem with any cameras anywhere and I’m an Oldie, it makes me feel safe. Do not think it intrudes into my privacy, in fact it makes me feel safer, and I wish there were even more around along with more lighting everywhere.
  • The cameras are there to help make everyone feel a little bit safer, knowing that everything is transparent. Or are they causing trouble now?

You would notice these the first time you see them, but once over the initial shock of seeing yourself on screen they wouldn't bother you. This is how obvious they are:

  • I'd get a mirror & create some groovy video feedback and then demand the footage back via subject access request (?). I think someone made a promo video using this process once, but I'd be doing it just to annoy Sainsburys

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

It's not just simple CCTV being used but facial recognition technology too!
As someone constantly followed and watched by security in stores (and no I'm not a shoplifter) it does get to you after awhile.

Nope - in the olden days you would have been looked at as if you were mad if you went into a shop and asked if you could buy a bottle of plain water.

Although if you said that you were prepared to pay over a pound for it they probably would have decided you definitely were mad, but would have found a screw top glass bottle, filled it from a tap in the back and happily taken your money from you).

I too find it strange ,but then I am of that age group If you are strong enough to run round a park would carrying a small bottle of water be too much ?
Everywhere I go I see folk carrying bottle of water ,we don't like in a climate in the UK where its so hot you need to rehydrate , or if not water then interminable cups of coffee. Can folk not manage to get through life today without permanently eating or drinking in the street
My late OH worked in The Sudan for three years on contract where the heat was pretty intense and to keep healthy you had to consume roughly about a litre of water an hour if possible (definitely never from a tap though :) ) and he drank bottled water a lot.But bearing in mind that we probably have pretty safe water in the UK tap water is fine and I am darned sure I would never cough up a quid for glorified tap water no matter if it was running down a mountainside
