I'd be more concerned about the people who don't have a job any more due to the amount of self-scan tills than about having CCTV watching those self-scan tills. Personally, I always insist on going to a till with a human operator, on principle.
It's only common sense to have the CCTV there, because there are an awful lot of people who will put high price items in their bag without scanning and paying for them if they think they can get away with it; and then we all end up paying when the shops raise their prices to counter the losses through theft. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -

Does that answer your question?Yes, more suited to 'Prase, vent & warnings'.
Talk about suspicious behaviour.0 -
It's not the increase in CCTV per se that irritates me. It's the reasons why that disappoints me.
Sainsburys, for example, have chosen to reduce customer service and introduce more and more self service tills to cut back on staff. Ironically at my local Sainsburys the tills have physically taken the place of the Customer Services desk which is now relocated to share a counter (and staff) with fags and lottery tickets. The cameras are because people cheat and the cameras are a cheaper option than staff.
IMO the only thing the 'major' supermarkets have to offer (so they say) over the 'discounters' is the shopping experience. I can't see that annoying people like OP with the cameras on top of the other worsening customer service is likely to improve their footfall.
Personally I'm an Aldi shopper and only go to Sainsburys for the, increasingly, few things that Aldi don't sell. All their changes just confirm that I've made the right choice.0 -

The screens have been used for many years in areas that a more prone to crime. The peopel are not smart enough to realise a camera is recording them so the screen tries to make it obvious. Maybe shop in a better area.0 -

So you are saying they are a required to make things function but are a thing people moan about becuase they can be misused and results in more annoyance because as I said they are required for things to work?
Not sure that definition works.0 -

Why are you shouting at me?
Why so upset about some CCTV and not others?
Its a security measure ( not one I have come across ) but thats all it is. It still wouldn't bug me at all and it certainly wouldn't have me having a hissy fit and posting inappropriately on a forum thats for sure
If I were wanting to discuss this on these boards, Id choose the correct one, like The Arms or even the praise/ vent one. Certainly not Oldstyle, no matter how many plastic carriers were refused0 -

Nope - in the olden days you would have been looked at as if you were mad if you went into a shop and asked if you could buy a bottle of plain water.
Although if you said that you were prepared to pay over a pound for it they probably would have decided you definitely were mad, but would have found a screw top glass bottle, filled it from a tap in the back and happily taken your money from you).0 -

To my surprise the there are individual cameras on each of the self service checkout filming you with an LCD screen so you can see yourself. Have been told that it's the same in Asda and Tesco. Why do people put up with It? It's bad enough that they've done away wih 85% of the checkout operators now this!
Has anyone seen the cameras in an Waitrose or M&S coz when they do I'm converting to online shopping for the tiny bit I do. Yet another reason to use local independents!0 -
