OP...easy to say now......get yourself a dash cam

That had crossed my mind but I do not think it would be much use in this case only to get colour, make and model of the vehicle as they basically came side ways in front of me so probably (unless I am wrong) would not get the reg number

It's easy to say while you're sat in your nice comfy armchair as you reply to a post on an internet forum with the fire on.

It can be a little bit different in reality.
Not to mention it also depends on the type of person you are. For all i know you could've been the sort to be seen on Jeremy Kyle itching to have a punch up with Steve. The OP on the other hand might get scared by their own farts.

Anyway, for the OP ... people on here will tell you you need to contact your insurance company immediately.

Technically you're supposed to but me personally i'd get quotes for the cost of repair from some independent garages and then run some quotes on an insurance comparison ... A) to take out insurance as though you've another years no claims and this incident never happened and then B) unless you've got protected no claims, run it as though you've lost some years (a relative of mine lost 2 years for their claim) and you have this claim on record.

See what the outcome is and then decide if you want to contact your insurance company about getting this damage repaired through them.

If you report it to them then that's it, for the next 5 years you'll have to declare it. No it wasn't your fault but then insurance companies don't care, they just want your money.

Been there & suffered it myself. Told the company someone hit me & drove off. I didn't claim to have the damage repaired but i've another 3 years of having to report it & pay for having 'done the right thing' - which lands me out of pocket.

I'll get crucified on here for that point of view but then what else is new. I get moaned at regardless of what i post so it's just another day in the life here. I'm just warning you what happened with me so you can decide whether you want it to happen to you too or not.

I am not the type of person to appear on Jeremy Kyle but not affraid of my own f*rts but would not want get involved with fist fights - In hindsight I should of made more of a chase but I was totally shocked and was for the next couple of hours and I stayed there as the'right' thing to do thinking the plo*ker might go on a short distance then come to their senses, they were also going very fast.

I now think the reason the plo*ker did'nt stop might be one of all of the following:

    1. They may of just come from the office party and were pi**ed

    2. They were not insured

    3. They were driving some one elses car thus not insured

    4. They were in a hurry to get home to try and start christmas early or have to read baby peter his bedtime story

    5. Were youngsters and could not afford to have a stain in their insurance record

    6. Just arrogant s*ds

I told you to get some quotes.

Go visit some body shops to get a quote from them to see what they'd charge you to repair your vehicle.

Jump on a comparison website, fill out the info as though you didn't have an incident and then do it again as though you did.

See what the outcome is. I can't tell you what it'd be because i've not gone to your local body shops and gotten quotes for damage i've not even seen ... but you can.
I've not ran your details through comparison websites - but you can.

It may well be cheaper in the long run to get it repaired through your insurance or it may not. Before diving in to anything with both feet you really ought to get an idea of cost before you can't go back.

You may decide you don't wish to repair the damage, who knows. I don't know what the damage is. Maybe you can continue driving as it is, maybe not. I chose not to have mine repaired as the damage wasn't the end of the world.

People here will try to scare you in to 'doing the right thing'. They'll make out like the government will be camped outside your door because you're a bad bad person for not reporting it to your insurance company immediately.

They tried the exact same thing with me and nobody came knocking at my door.

They (many on here) act like they're holier than thou but i'm sure you delve in to their lives enough they wont be as squeaky clean as they like to make out. At the end of the day, do what you feel is best for you.

And don't forget, this guy didn't stop, so highly unlikely he has your plate either, so chances of him reporting you saying you hit him are very likely slim to zero. So all this scaring that some of these will be trying to do on you is a waste of time.

EDIT: Regards the CCTV. I don't know the legal ins and outs but i haven't seen it suggested yet, which makes me think it's not an option.
But have you thought of going to this supermarket, asking for the manager, saying you were involved in an incident at xx:xx hours on X-date at X-location of the car park, you understand that you cannot see the CCTV yourself but can they please take a look to see if their video shows anything at all?

    Don't ask...don't get.

It can still be driven and is legal to do so - lights all working, no sharp bits on show - damage badly crushed front plastic bumber right side

    10 characters ;)

So you've never been hit with the 10 character requirement for a post?

Since you're so smart i thought you would've worked out that one.

Don't worry about it. I was only saying that for those who try and make it sound oh so easy looking back on it in their armchair.
When you're there, involved in it & everything is happening quick it can be easy to not make the best decision. You've just been whacked after all.

As for why they left. No point in worrying yourself with it. I would only deal with what i can deal with from this point forwards.

Me personally ... i'd be making an immediate stop at the supermarket, asking for the manager & asking them to go over their CCTV from that point in time. I'd point out i know i can't look at it myself or even look at it with them so could they please take a look as you were hit.

If you get no joy there i'd jump on the local Facebook groups as a last resort & ask if anyone has seen a car of X-colour that has suddenly received damage since such-&-such a date.

But aside from that, i'd be doing the dummy run insurance quotes like i said, i'd be getting garage repair quotes like i said and then once you have these figures to hand you will be able to work out whether it's cheaper for you to A) get it repaired through your insurance and then have to declare it for 5 years or B) get it repaired at a local shop and nobody is any the wiser. You keep your no claims and you declare nothing because it 'never happened'.

or C) you live with the damage as it is, but if you do that then telling the insurance would be daft in my view, despite all these squeaky clean members of MSE saying you should.
