Apple online order

  • Skimming through this..... The OP's financial situation is completely irrelevant. The issue at hand is should Apple be able to 'block' an amount of money from the OP's account for days after the order has been cancelled?

I have no financial problems. I'm considering the purchase of a Mac Pro with XDR display (no not with the stand) let's say it's £15k. Apple decide to cancel my order after seeing I'm slagging them off on there forums. By potentially holding the £15k for 2 days I might miss out on another deal. Is that right?

I totally agree with what you are saying here :) the problem is that if I went and did it on Apple again, it may not arrive in time for Christmas, and also what if I then go and decide that I want to order something exclusive to the Apple store, I can’t because they don’t want my custom. If it was for 15k I would be VERY angry as that is a lot of money, and I doubt you would want to just place another order as it could do the same thing! The problem I have is apple should be able to tell my bank that they don’t want to hold the funds anymore as if they do that my bank said it can be back in the next working day, but Apple refused when I asked them to email my bank like nationwide had asked them to. I completely agree with what you are saying, as because it’s pending, it’s not available, I can’t spend it! They are effectively stopping me spending my money. Thanks for agreeing with me here as I don’t think Apple should be allowed to do it :), also i posted here after they cancelled my order, but i know you are just using that for comparison purposes :)
  • If that was me I'd be kicking up a right stink and making sure that Apple paid for any issues that they caused with the hold after cancelling the order.

Unfortunately people with financial problems tend to get walked all over.

Also agreed here :), in fact i may ring them up and ask what they are going to do about it, ill just say i cant afford someones gift now, although i can and I've already finished my shopping for xmas :) (I hope they don’t read this form 😀) there shouldn't be a hold if its cancelled, it should be reimbursed right away :/ It’s fine, they can try and walk over me all they want, I’m not sure what they think the relevance is of my bank account anyway, if I can afford it I can afford it and that’s not the problem 😀

Apple will be telling your bank. But it will be via the card systems. Could update overnight (but given its Friday. More likely to be Monday now)
Would you really want Apple to email (remember unsecure) all you details to your bank. We have had retailers ask to do this. They are told no chance as they have to go through the correct process.
While some banks can remove the pending transaction from your account. Which allows you access to your funds.
That authorisation is still in the system and can still debit if the retailer wants too.
If that happens it is a real PIA for customers as there is then nothing the bank can do.

I did think it was weird the bank had suggested that, I just got off the phone to Apple, and it looks like my account was hacked 2 years ago and someone placed 24 orders which were all cancelled. Apple have suggested to me just now that I could email my bank a screenshot of the order cancellation status to show them it is cancelled

Thanks! I do know why it’s reserved, I’m not stupid and I know I will get it back, the problem I HAVE is that I am not sure when I’m getting the funds back, and it’s okay I’ve no problems, I do have a savings account, which I did not dip into by the way, so I can save. And I bought one from Argos. No issues. Actually I haven’t really tried for a credit card, I don’t want one, plus I know I would spend money I am borrowing, because that is the concept of a credit card, you are borrowing the money, you can’t afford to make the purchase without it, so you have to borrow it. So no I would rather not get a card and buy things I do not need with a loan. You can’t tell me I can’t control my spending because if I couldn’t I would take out lots of credit cards and then Max them out. That’s unable to control your spending. I don’t need one, I don’t want one. Stop suggesting it. I think everyone would buy what they didn’t need on a credit card, it’s like a supermarket, they are designed to sell you things you don’t really need. I can live fine without one, thanks. Also I do have an emergency fund if I have a savings account. My spending is under control, once again you don’t take me so take that feeling of entitlement to comment on my spending and financial situation somewhere else! I have said previously this is for Christmas, I don’t just have spending sprees for the fun of them.
Also, just for clarification, it is unlikely I would get a good rate credit card anyway. So it would make it too expensive to borrow and I do prefer my catalogue.

No you don't just get a credit card to get things you can't afford. I have a few credit cards and I never spend more than I can afford to pay off right away. I also don't buy things I don't need just because it's a credit card so no kot everyone would do that.

If you pay off a credit card when the statement arrives each month you pay no interest at all so the interest rate is irrelevant.
Also like I said you can get cards that give you a percentage of each purchase back as cashback and all card also have to give you section 75 protection on purchases costing between £100 and £30,000.

There are so many benefits of a credit card that almost everyone should have one. You can't compare it to a catalogue account which is not a good idea to have if it is encouraging you to buy things you don't need from them.

Thanks, but I would rather have a catalogue because I don’t buy things I don’t need there, usually clothes for a party or something. Like a credit card you can get anything, that’s not good for me

Unless they have the facility to remove it, there is nothing Nationwide can do. Other than wait for the Visa system to work it out.

It is only processing banks that would have the facility to fully remove the pending authorisation. All Nationwide would be able to do would put a corresponding credit on your account to balance it out. But they may not do that, even with proof from Apple.

I love the way retailers always put it back to the banks to sort out their mess.

Thank you guys for your help, what a nightmare! Arghhhhh! Can’t believe they would do this, it still hasn’t gone back in (well it’s in, just not available to spend.) A company like Apple I would not have expected this to happen. Thanks for letting me know though guys and yeah I totally agree the finances has nothing to do with it, I am entitled to spend my earnings as I wish x

It's the weekend. Banking systems do not work over them... Hence why you can shop on Friday and it does not debit till Monday/Tuesday. Add in Christmas and you have a extra 2 days next week where they will not update.
