Paypal is there for the safety of the buyer as much as the seller. I wouldn't send £280 with no cover whatsoever to a stranger on the internet.
What you should have done was send via trackable means to the registered address on Paypal and keep your receipts safe for 180 days.
outside of ebay there is NO protection for the seller
the OP (we think) is a private individual , not a company
paypal will not care two hoots about proof of postage or even a sugnucture0 -
His bigger issue is if he's cancelled the ebay sale they may well chase for £280 worth of fees for selling off site.0

outside of ebay YOU have no protection for charge back , by normal paypal
paypal will not care that you have photos or proof of posting
Sellers have exactly the same protection on PayPal whether used on eBay or not. PayPal and eBay are now separate companies anyway.twhitehousescat wrote: »outside of ebay there is NO protection for the seller

Of course they will, you might want to brush up on PayPal terms and conditions , seller protection applies wherever you sell as long as you fulfil all the requirements, the basic one being you send within 7 days to the address given by PayPal.pulliptears wrote: »His bigger issue is if he's cancelled the ebay sale they may well chase for £280 worth of fees for selling off site.
Pulliptears makes a very important point , if there were any messages at all via eBay messages before you removed the item for sale then you may well be charged the FVFs and also get restricted.
THis is the sticky thread about postage when using PayPal

Also just to clarify some other misinformation, a claim for fraudulent use of a card is the easiest claim to defend, all that is needed is proof of postage, so as advised keep everything for a minimum of 180 days.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Don't worry, it makes no difference at all whether you are a private or business seller , have a read of the sticky thread link I posted.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. In that case you should be fine , just be aware that if buyer (or indeed any other person) had asked about buying this or made any indication that they wanted it then you would have had issues.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. You've had corrections to the bizarre and incorrect posts from twhitehousescat from soolin.
A friends and family payment can actually be worse than a normal payment if a chargeback occurs as there is no seller protection from chargebacks with friends and family payments.
Perhaps head over to the ebay board and read the sticky re postage, that will tell you how you are protected and give you all the tools for you to work out if you are willing to continue with a sale. I say "a sale" as your buyer has probably run a mile - I would. Cancelling and asking for Friends and Family is the biggest flag of scammer....
Hopefully you can salvage something from the experience - preferably your fees back.0 -

thus is not ebay tho , its a private individual (NOT A COMPANY) just selling odds and ends off
private dealings are different to selling on ebay0
