TSB were baffled

0202002 doesn't sound like a cheque number, too many digits, I think it's coincidence and the Santander cheque hasn't been cashed yet.
Indeed, and I assume (certainly it's my experience) that most cheque books start from a low number, starting 000001 and progressing to, for example, 000050 at the end of the first 50-long cheque book, the next book starting 000051.
In which case 0202002 isn't likely to be a cheque number because, as several have already pointed out it's too long and, on the argument I've made here, the form of the number seems wrong/too high, especially for an account where cheques are rarely used (so I'd expect it to b a low number)..
Perhaps the OP can tell us more about this number.0 -
I'm curious. Why did you write a £100 cheque for this person? How did you send it to him? Have you tried to contact him?
It's not only TSB who are baffled by this thread!
Not quite sure why you're baffled that someone has sent someone else a cheque.
That isn't a baffling activity! Why query it? It's not mysterious at all - I get and send cheques frequently myself.
What is mysterious is the tale of this cheque being 'debited' from TSB not Santander.
But actually, so far, apart from the same value transaction and a spurious reference which may or may not be relevant, there's no evidence that occurred. All the OP has is a 100 debit in TSB and a cheque they issued, but which may not have been cashed yet, from Santander.
The mystery is merely that - why does the OP make the link, when there doesn't seem to be one. And if there is a link (which I doubt) how did it happen.
Why the cheque was written is immaterial.0 -

PS: I was trying to find a form of words about my doubts about this thread without offending the OP.0 -
You assume wrong. My next cheque in my Santander cheque book is 022049. I have absolutely certainly not ever written 22,049 cheques.Indeed, and I assume (certainly it's my experience) that most cheque books start from a low number, starting 000001 and progressing to, for example, 000050 at the end of the first 50-long cheque book, the next book starting 000051.
So, a number starting with 02 may well be a Santander cheque number. 0202002 would, however, not be a cheque number as cheque numbers only are 6 digits. May be it's an invoice number.0 -

What you say may well be so but what has been written by Zanderman iis correct in respect of any cheque book that I have seen over the past 25 years or so.You assume wrong. My next cheque in my Santander cheque book is 022049. I have absolutely certainly not ever written 22,049 cheques.

Presumably you've not seen an Alliance & Leicester plc (now Santander) cheque then. What you say may well be so but what has been written by Zanderman iis correct in respect of any cheque book that I have seen over the past 25 years or so.
My only chequebook with them started at 400001.Eco Miser

What's the principal got to do with it?No actually I havn't. But the principal is the same, just a 4 before the zeros.
:D:p
I hadn't previously realised that the validity of a cheque number is determined by what you have seen in cheque books, and by what Zanderman assumes. Sorry. Are you going to tell Santander that their cheque numbers are wrong, are should I?What you say may well be so but what has been written by Zanderman iis correct in respect of any cheque book that I have seen over the past 25 years or so.0 -

My present cheque book starts at 301591 (Nationwide). It looks as if the first figure represents something to the system and I've written 1591+ cheques which, as I've had the account since the mid 1980s makes sense.0
