The TSB account list the transaction as "0202002" which happens to be what is on the Santander stub in our cheque book. .....

    .
The Santander cheque was made out to Peter WhXXXer, somebody we have never met.

What did you write on the stub of the cheque - date? payee ? amount ? invoice ref perhaps ?

Just ring TSB (tonight) and report a suspicious fraud - ignore the branch and any reference to Santander.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • I'm inclined to think the same as

Daft question but you don't happen to have an old santander account that you've switched to TSB in the past and therefore the cheque issued on the wrong account (i.e. closed santander account and not the current one you still have with them) has then gone through the payment transfer process in respect to switched out bank accounts??)

You might have opened a sole Santander account purely to switch into TSB and the cheque that was issued was from this switched account and not from your joint Santander.

Hence when the cheque was cashed the debit was forwarded onto the TSB account and to help you identify the debit they have quoted the Santander cheque number.

When was the last time a cheque has been successfully written from the same cheque book and debited from your existing Santander account? Does the account number (written in machine readable format at the bottom of the cheques) match your existing Santander account number?

This makes no sense. They must know what it is.

I have just realised something else. Cheque numbers are usually 6 digits not 7. Does anybody have a Santander account with a cheque book who could confirm the number of digits in their cheque numbers just in case they are different to other banks?

Our Santander cheques have 6 digits but it is about 5 years since issued and have only used a few cheques.

Why not ask TSB for a copy of the cheque? Then you can see exactly which cheque was used.

I'm curious. Why did you write a £100 cheque for this person? How did you send it to him? Have you tried to contact him?

It's not only TSB who are baffled by this thread!

We went into TSB to get an explanation, we told them we did not have a TSB cheque book.
They could not tell us what the transaction was.
We then showed them our Santander cheque book.

Not good that a staff member could not say what the payment was. System should show the type of payment and if a cheque a image of it.
But a cheque written from another bank to a 3rd party will not debit your account. As there is no account link on any cheque other then the account it was written from.

0202002 doesn't sound like a cheque number, too many digits, I think it's coincidence and the Santander cheque hasn't been cashed yet.
  • Try writing another cheque and see if you can achieve the same result.
