The Santander is a joint account. We have two TSB accounts none of the accounts have been switched.
We think a possible explanation is that the Santander cheque was presented in our local TSB branch and the teller may have decided to make a payment from my wife's TSB account.

How would the "teller" know the sort code and account number of your wife's account?

The 'teller' would have decided no such thing. Please clarify what you mean by 'the cheque was presented' in our local TSB branch? Presented to who by who and for what purpose?.
As I said "We think a possible explanation is ........
Presented by the person who we gave the cheque to, who was paying it into his TSB branch

When we get an explanation i will post it

Two weeks ago we wrote a SANTANDER cheque for £100 pounds.

The only way this makes sense is that the cheque was payable to you or your wife and you or your wife paid it in. Even then my TSB account only refers to credits by cheque as CHQ on my statements and doesn't give the number of the cheque.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Do you have a cheque book on the TSB account in question?
If yes, does the cheque number correspond to a cheque in your current cheque book? Is that cheque still present in the book, has it previously been debited to the account or was it cancelled?
If no, does the cheque number correspond to a cheque in previous cheque books? If yes, same questions apply.
Otherwise ask TSB where the cheque came from as no such cheque number exists in your cheque books for that account

We do not have a TSB cheque book.
The TSB account list the transaction as "0202002" which happens to be what is on the Santander stub in our cheque book.
That is why we presume the money taken from our TSB account was from the cheque from our Santander cheque book
    We very rarely write cheques.

At the moment we are not out of pocket and will wait for the 17th when we should get a response from TSB.
The Santander cheque was made out to Peter WhXXXer, somebody we have never met.

Then why have you not told TSB that you don't have a cheque book on that account and ask them to explain what this transaction is? Forget any mention of Santander it just confuses them. Ask them outright 'WHAT IS THIS TRANSACTION?.'
This Mr Peter W, who you have never met but gave a cheque to. How do you know he banks with TSB?
Are we really supposed to believe that Mr Peter W went into his TSB branch, paid in a cheque drawn on your Santander account which the TSB 'teller' just decided to debit to your TSB account? How would this 'teller' even know you had a TSB account?

We went into TSB to get an explanation, we told them we did not have a TSB cheque book.
They could not tell us what the transaction was.
We then showed them our Santander cheque book.

I have no explanation, that is why I have asked if anyone could explain what has happened.
It is not unusual to give cheques to people you do not meet. Have you not heard of the postal system LOL (sorry I only mentioned the fact that the person who the cheque was made out to was not myself or my wife, as someone else suggested)

OP, from what you have said so far (correct me if I've got this wrong) you have had a debit on your TSB account of £100. With reference 0202002.

You have also issued a cheque to a third party, who may or may not have even paid it in yet, on your Santander account, the cheque was for £100 and the cheque number was 0202002.

And you're linking the two events.

But you don't know whether the cheque has been presented.
    Or where it was presented.
Or how (it would seem impossible) the bank (any bank) could somehow debit an account with a different bank without first knowing that the Mr & Mrs Hamishdog who wrote the santander cheque also have two TSB accounts. And how would the bank (any bank) know that? The Santander cheque gives no link - none whatsover. Just the name of the drawer and their santander account. That's not enough to debit another account.

So, surely, unless there's something else going on here that we're not being told, the likelihood is that the £100 from TSB is something else entirely.. Nothing to do with your Santander cheque.
  • Dear Zanderman you are correct

But TSB could not enlighten us about the debit.
The cheque we wrote for £100 has not appeared on our Santander account.
I know I am linking the two events but we cannot think of another reason.
When I get an explanation I will let you know

This makes no sense. They must know what it is.

I have just realised something else. Cheque numbers are usually 6 digits not 7. Does anybody have a Santander account with a cheque book who could confirm the number of digits in their cheque numbers just in case they are different to other banks?
