I have had a humax freesat box for about 9 years, just connected up same as sky box and away it went.
Do I need it or just want it.

Oh dear what a shame. I have just ditched Sky and gone to nowtv, have you looked at that?

    Pre Sky Q then.

Not so easy nowadays though, unless a Hybrid LNB was specified and installed along with the Sky Q box.

I dropped Sky and switched to Freesat with the Humax 1100 box. I bought three Now tv units but switched to Netflix and Amazon Prime. Sky are robbing whatsits in my opinion that's why I no longer use their Now tv units.
  • I think there’s an equivelent Freesat box that uses the same lnb that allows similar features to sky q. Might be worth visiting richer sounds for some advice.

As already mentioned, the Humax Freesat recorder HDR-1100S, will allow you to watch and record TV from your satellite but I wouldn't say it was "similar" to Sky Q in any shape or form.

At my dad's house we've got rid of the Sky and use the aforementioned Humax in combination with a Roku streaming stick to view Freesat channels, Amazon Prime, Netflix and the Sky channels on NowTV. Works out extremely cheaper than Sky although the Humax box does have issues, ie, really slow to start up is one of them.

There are Freesat PVR but none are current compatible the Sky Q LNB, unless it's a Hybrid. And the user interface is completely different.

The next generation of Freesat PVR's made by Arris (partly ex Pace) as Humax have stopped making them, maybe compatible but as yet know one actually knows nor do they have a release date though late 2019 was originally provisionally stated but now likely to be sometime in 2020.

Where is your Freeview box going to get it's signal from?
