Who do you pay rent to? Direct to LL's bank or to his sister?

If sister, write to her asking for his address and quote the Landlord & Tenant Act 1985 S1.

If you pay him direct, write to him asking him if he is resident overseas. If he says no, fine - you are covering yourself. If he says yes, write explaining why you are witholding 20% and ask him to send you the required permission from HMRC (see earlier link).

Post - just put it all back in the letterbox marked 'return to seder' It's not your problem.

Nothing illegal in what you are doing, but it's not your job to be his postman!

    When you moved in
    * did you pay a deposit? Is it protected?
    * did you receive a gas report? An EPC? A 'how to rent' gov leaflet?
    * an address in England 'for serving notices on the landlord'? (eg his sister's)

Post post back in post-box with "Not known at this address, return to sender".

    Never lie:
Which piece of this advice is the OP expected to follow ?

Sincere apologies for being unclear: Post any post delivered to you addressed to the landlord back in any Royal Mail post-box with "Not known at this address, return to sender" written on it.

    Best wishes to all.

when you eventually leave and he wants to make unreasonable deductions, use it as leverage, but report him anyways, I hate tax cheats

Umm, nobody has asked whether you need a reference from the landlord. Will you?

It’s petty to put his post back in the letterbox marked 'not known', but you can let it mount up a bit.

On no account would I lie to the doctors. It’s conspiracy to commit fraud. It’s up to you whether you report the fraud against the NHS that you currently know is taking place.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Their other threads suggest they're in the middle of applying for a mortgage, so probably not.

We had this happen at our current address as it used to be a rental. Still after 5 years we are getting pension statements, P60s and the like. We just wait until we get a pile and then put it back in the post box. We once did get a phonecall from the council confirming that "ex tenant" did not live there. Turns out they lied on the admission form so that their kid got into a better school!

We used to get a lot of doctors appointment letters. Just mentioned it to the receptionist when I happened to be there and they flagged it up. They had 2 families of ex tenants registered at our address, 10 people in total including myself and my partner. That stopped as soon as I flagged it up.
