Weed Killer

Options
Got a large garden and want to clear the path of weeds. Its pretty large so I'll need to buy 2 large packs of weed killer from homebase at £15 a pack.

I remember reading somewhere that its possible to use some weedkiller in its chemical form and pay £2 for a large bag. I cant remember what this chemical was - caustic soda? Probably something else but Im not sure.

If anyone knows or has any other advise for the garden weeds please let me know. TIA.

Probably Sodium Chlorate a cheap and effective weed killer available from most DIY and garden outlets.

Asda's own brand gardening products are made by a top manufacturer but sold at much cheaper prices under the Asda brand. They're worth a look.
Here I go again on my own....

Flame gun. Much more environmentally friendly than chemical weedkiller. You can buy them cheaply enough in DIY/Gardening stores. Just need to singe the core of the plant to kill them, not incinerate the whole thing.

Agree with Mustang. Much better to use flame gun. (It's also good for lighting barbie)
Dont forget weedkiller is very toxic, carcinogenic etc & some of it will be tramped into the house & onto carpets. There are storage risks as well if you have children.
If you decide to use weedkiller try and get the thick rubber gloves (creosote gloves?) to wear when applying, and I have heard that your watering can is permanently contaminated.
I have a great organic garden & have never resorted to weedkiller chemicals in 18 years.
    Nice to save.

Go to an agricultural merchant. They are far cheaper than DIY or garden shops. For example I have a gallon jug of GLYPHOS, kills everything but does not contaminate the ground. Also fertiliser. 25kg sack for £5 much cheaper than a piddly little box from B & Q

ooh... I was going to post a thread about weed killer. I have a drive which isn't concrete but it isn't soil either so I need something that can kill them as there are loads of them and quite tall. There is a bit of grass too which I want dead.

I need something not too expensive that won't harm animals that works well without the need to dig.

If I burned them, would it control them for a while?

Something with Glyphosate in as it's active ingredient will see you right - as soon as it's dried, the danger to life & limb is over.

For those with CostCo access a 5 litre RTU RoundUp with gun is currently £12.49+VAT with £3 cashback offer in CostCo at the moment.

Ooh, we've got a flame gun somewhere down the end of the garden ... and here's me sitting at the window looking out at a four foot high dandelion and grass not far behind it ... I think I'll have to see if I can get through the jungle tomorrow and find the flame gun and see what I can do.

The path is overgrown with grass in the cracks and loads of other weeds too. I really wanted a chemical solution to keep it clear for a while. I am concerned at the environmental damage too, and considering there is quite a lot of wildlife in the garden Ill certainly take it into consideration.

Is it easy to use the flame gun, even for a hugely overgrown large path cracks/balls of grass in the small cracks? How about the weeds between brick cracks? Won’t it fertilise the larger cracks for faster growth for new weed seeds? How much am I looking at paying for a flame gun, and where from?

I use Wilkos Sodium Chlorate. Just a couple of quid for a large tub. If rain is due I sprinkle it on dry to the weeds and let the rain wash it in. Does the job.
