    Not in my current toxic environment - in this case, it's a new senior manager, who p'd off the next level of management so they all left, then he recruited old friends and colleagues who share his !!!! bullying attitude. They've now p'd off the senior administrators, who are leaving in their droves. But the senior manager doesn't care because it means all those who have experience and raise objections will be gone, and the place will be filled with those who doff their cap and will say 'yes'.

  • Totally agree-my daughter is in one at the moment -they have called her in for a disciplinary meeting(tomorrow-with a manager who has been there a month and is leaving next week) because she took time off to look after me when I collapsed and went to hospital and demanded that she provide proof of my illness.I refused because quite frankly my health is none of their business and I checked online and by law she doesn't have to provide any kind of proof. Other people there have taken time off far more frequently and have been caught posting photos while out drinking, supposedly off sick, but they are not being spoken to. All seems very unfair and thankfully she has other options.

    So you're making your daughters life more difficult....well done.
    Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

    That's normal for my work place. It doesn't have to say what the illness is etc, just that you attended hospital, doctors etc.

    If you're not a dependant there is no entitlement to leave, and the leave is to give time to make alternative arrangements. If you were in hospital, you were being cared for. Your daughter may wish to check out the legislation more fully before standing on rights she may not have.
    What other people do or don't do, however unfair it may seem, is irrelevant to your daughter's disciplinary.
    All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

    Took time off as what? Annual leave or compassionate? It would be no hardship to provide a letter/doctors note and redact out the medical particulars.

    My current workplace is incredibly toxic. I've been there six years and it gets worse and worse

    I had my personal locker broken into and absolutely nothing was done about it after I reported it, somebody even owned up to it. I have also been filmed and photographed without my knowledge by another employee and been exposed to harmful fumes from paint and exhausts

    I had a meeting with one of the two directors and the head of HR just over four months ago and they have only now got back to me about letting me know their findings. They'll just say there's no evidence, everything is always covered up and certain people protected

    I've been looking to leave for a number of years but the pay is good for what I do which makes it hard to find something else. I'm determined to leave in 2020. The way people are treated is awful, I've seen so many good people leave and the ones that remain and are protected are useless. It makes no sense to me

    All I can do is move on to hopefully a fairer company

    You are right to a very limited extent in that she doesn't have to provide proof to claim the minimum the law requires, which is "short" periods of unpaid leave in an "emergency" situation involving a dependent. If her employer is allowing anything above and beyond the legal minimum then that can be conditional on her providing any information or proof that they require.

    As others have said, what has allegedly happened with other staff is irrelevant.

    People are often surprised to learn that there is no legal entitlement to "compassionate leave". There is a limited entitlement to short periods of unpaid leave in the event of an emergency situation with a dependent. As you say it would be no hardship (and indeed very sensible) to provide some evidence that was the situation.

    Annual leave can only be taken with the employer's consent. They must allow at least the statutory minimum to be taken each year but the employer can totally dictate when.

    Some people simply struggle with many aspects of working life and would probably perceive most workplaces as ‘toxic’. I’ve worked with lots of people who seethe at what they see as slights and injustices and think that the wrong people are promoted and they’re unfairly overlooked. They all share two things; over confidence and a lack of awareness.
