Is there a shortage of good, competent and ethical employees?
It seems to me that companies are putting up with incompetent staff, especially those that cause a workplace to become toxic - this includes managers.
They appear happy to let loyal, high performing employees (who also have great values) leave, in favour of bully managers and employees.
All this to the detriment of the business and well-being and productivity of the other employees.
Is this now the norm?

it could be poor recruitment policy when it comes to employing managers. its usually the case when a company promotes within.0 -
So are these companies fearful of something?
They appear to feel safe with the bully types.
Maybe it's because these types are more 'out there' - and also tend to do a lot of ego stroking, which a number of Senior Management seem to love.0 -
They usually promote from within so the applicants are well known by the senior managers and they basically do as they are told and not upset the apple cart..., if you know what i mean...0

It's all in the training. At 18.5k I received 5 days training before I had to go it alone. I sent 62 emails on my first day solo and had someone the next day question what I was doing. (Nearly three weeks on it is starting to make more sense.) there was some one dropped into cover the dept on one day's training so I get my company doesn't suffer fools gladly.
But I learnt the office supervisor after many years, had never done my job. (as nice a person as they are) I was quite baffled by this and I don't know whether it's a help or hindrance.
It was said in the interview, people in the company were friends although thankfully it's not in your face. Between 9-5 there are not many words spoken. I'm still debating if this is a good thing or not as different characters can't handle that, whether I'm being soppy or not.0 -
I wouldn't be surprised if having "toxic workplaces" is behind the acknowledged poor productivity of the UK.
Yes a workplace needs to have policies & procedures in place that can be used to influence human behaviour when needed. However its says a lot about workplaces when in a matter of weeks its easy to spot the favourites and the devious manager(s).0 -
Of course the alternative explanation is that the employee accusing the work place of being toxic is the one with the issue, and who can't get on with people/keep a job without it going pear-shaped.
There are poor workplaces and there are poor employees. I've seen both but I've had more good workplaces than bad.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

From personal experience I believe there are far less toxic workplaces now than there used to be.0

i've seen many employees come and go.., they all give the same reason for leaving.

Totally agree-my daughter is in one at the moment -they have called her in for a disciplinary meeting(tomorrow-with a manager who has been there a month and is leaving next week) because she took time off to look after me when I collapsed and went to hospital and demanded that she provide proof of my illness.I refused because quite frankly my health is none of their business and I checked online and by law she doesn't have to provide any kind of proof. Other people there have taken time off far more frequently and have been caught posting photos while out drinking, supposedly off sick, but they are not being spoken to. All seems very unfair and thankfully she has other options.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34 :eek:

all we want is a "fair and consistent" work place.
if your face doesn't fit or you are not friends with management, you won't get that.
did your daughter ask for unpaid leave? did she have any holidays left?
has she been through an investigation before the disciplinary?0
