Some people simply struggle with many aspects of working life and would probably perceive most workplaces as ‘toxic’. I’ve worked with lots of people who seethe at what they see as slights and injustices and think that the wrong people are promoted and they’re unfairly overlooked. They all share two things; over confidence and a lack of awareness.

    Totally agree.

Often i hear "oh i could do his job / that job" when in reality the answer is "no - you couldnt".

I think the reverse of the O/P. I've found working environments to be easier to work in over the last 20 years or so, not harder.

...Or maybe they look around the workplace and think - this is not the way people should be treating other people.

Respect and kindness from all levels and within all levels, is not too much too ask.

Its not. And thats a two way street.

The place i'm with currently cant do enough for their staff. Genuinely a great company.

Of course the alternative explanation is that the employee accusing the work place of being toxic is the one with the issue, and who can't get on with people/keep a job without it going pear-shaped.
There are poor workplaces and there are poor employees. I've seen both but I've had more good workplaces than bad.

    Totally agree.

It's all in the training. At 18.5k I received 5 days training before I had to go it alone. I sent 62 emails on my first day solo and had someone the next day question what I was doing. (Nearly three weeks on it is starting to make more sense.) there was some one dropped into cover the dept on one day's training so I get my company doesn't suffer fools gladly.

But I learnt the office supervisor after many years, had never done my job. (as nice a person as they are) I was quite baffled by this and I don't know whether it's a help or hindrance.

It was said in the interview, people in the company were friends although thankfully it's not in your face. Between 9-5 there are not many words spoken. I'm still debating if this is a good thing or not as different characters can't handle that, whether I'm being soppy or not.

You're mistaking management with being a foreman.

I can successfully manage people without ever having done their job.

Totally agree-my daughter is in one at the moment -they have called her in for a disciplinary meeting(tomorrow-with a manager who has been there a month and is leaving next week) because she took time off to look after me when I collapsed and went to hospital and demanded that she provide proof of my illness.I refused because quite frankly my health is none of their business and I checked online and by law she doesn't have to provide any kind of proof. Other people there have taken time off far more frequently and have been caught posting photos while out drinking, supposedly off sick, but they are not being spoken to. All seems very unfair and thankfully she has other options.

And you cant at all see this from the company's perspective?

They've an employee who was there to do a job suddenly doesnt turn in and they're just to go "oh thats ok, sure dont worry yourself". They're running a business. Your daughter not being there means someone else has to take up the slack or they have to take evasive action to find a temp replacement.

The crux of it is - if you're not happy in your workplace - leave. Find another job and people who are going to treat you better / promote you / allow you to do what you want, etc, etc.

    Totally, totally agree here.

Its the daughter here who has an unsupportive mum.

read the reply I just wrote and then think again...she let them know in good time why she wouldn't be in and they have not disciplined anyone else who has taken far more days off than she has

like i said read the other long reply I just wrote...she has done way more than she is contracted for at the drop of a hat, even working up to 2 weeks with no days off...

Adding that the only thing I could provide is my hospital discharge letter which has WAY too much personal information on it. A sick note if I could get one is one thing-a letter with a lot of personal info on including all the medications I take and treatment I was given is a bit much don't you think?Or would you be happy for everyone to know these things about you when it's not even your employment ...

Also thanks for assuming I'm a crappy parent and not supportive. I rarely post here on this forum and certainly won't be posting again for any reason.
