Neighbour's dog and barking.

  • Would some sort of ultrasound device quieten the dog if you positioned it in such a way to direct the sound to the room you think the dog is in?

The dog's usually in the bedroom next to my bedroom (no idea why, it faces the road and the dog barks at anything and everything that passes). I'll look into it, but I wouldn't want to cause any distress to the dog, he only barks as he's afraid. The issue's the owners, if it's not one thing it's another. They've replaced music in the garden at full blast every night with a dog who barks all the time, it seems.

Noise cancelling headphones (£100) Foam (£4.00), then silicon (2 sets, neither worked £8.99 + £5.99) , now pluggerz (£8.99). I'll send them the bill if I have to buy any more. This is on top of the £120 a day job I lost because they were making so much noise that I couldn't concentrate.

I can't imagine sleeping in headphones (I sleep on my side).

I note that you haven't tried tailor-made noise-cancelling earplugs. They cancel noise and are comfortable.

  • So sorry about your situation cake crusader, and feel sorry for the poor dog . I won't advise as to what you should do regarding the neighbours as if they know it's you complaining , then that's not what you want.

However, I know times are hard etc but I had a pair of sleepphones.
They did cost around £35 iirc, and they are good imho
It may be an idea to checkout the sleepphones website .
You can get wired, or Bluetooth .
You wear them like a headband and there's no bulky feel of normal headphones ,as the ear pieces are like two pads in a sock .
Well, you get the picture .
    Hope this helps

I'm strongly tempted, but they are an end of terraced so they will know it's me. I'm trying to think of a 'nicer' way to sort it first. They have their TV on in the bedroom until 4am, some nights I can hear every word of the TV programme, the husband's out at work by 07:20 (I don't always hear him but he does the same thing every day), dog's barking from 07:30, I'm knackered. I've no idea how they can manage on so little sleep. I hear the other side but only a very little.

You’ve tried to sort it out in a ‘nice’ way and it’s got you nowhere. Time to stop being so nice. I’d talk them one more time and say if the situation doesn’t improve you’ll be left with no option other than to go to the council. I’d also keep a noise log starting now - my council has one on their website - and show it to the neighbours

When I had similar problems my local council were actually very helpful. They sent a warning letter which did the trick.

I'd happily try them if the neighbour's paid for them! I think they've cost me enough cash. ;) I sleep on my side, I can't sleep with headphones digging into my ears (or silicon ear plugs). I bought some pluggerz yesterday and they didn't seem too bad. One did fall out and I was woken by the dog at 8:10, I'm not as knackered today though so maybe that 40 mins made the difference. I'll see how things go tomorrow. :)

I don't really want to cause more issues with them so I'm trying to keep things friendly at the moment. I'll take a look at the sleephones, thank you! :)
  • Your being too nice.......your spending a fortune and your neighbour's dog will still be barking, the problem is not the dog.Time to be firm with them....keep your dog quiet or the council will be involved,we had problems with dog next door huffed them for a while after we told them but peace and quiet now.

Yes, because they are an absolute nightmare. If it's not one thing it's something else. I'd rather find a way to cope with the dog because I know that if I go to the council there will be another issue on the horizon which will probably be worse. They don't give a hoot what they are doing or how their behaviour affects their neighbours (alcohol issues, I think). I can't afford to move house so I'm stuck here until I can.
