Neighbour's dog and barking.

It's a Jack Russel and barks at anything, it's worse when it's left alone. I work shifts, often finishing at 2am, get to bed at 3am. For some reason only known to my neighbours they like to go to the supermarket every Saturday morning at 07:30, leaving the dog locked up in their bedroom (next to my bedroom), so for an hour and a half all I can hear is it barking, scratching and bashing into furniture. I've tried to speak to them but the husband lies and says they haven't gone out (this was when they returned with bags of shopping at 9am), I spoke to his wife and she said she'd put the dog in a different room, but it's made no difference at all. The dog barks pretty much every day from 0700/0730ish for a good few hours, the barking is off and on during the day too but that's not so much of an issue. I've tried noise cancelling headphones but they aren't great to sleep in and putting them on once I've been woken up defeats the objective, I've tried various different types of ear plugs but I seem to take them out when I'm half asleep as they are uncomfortable. I've just spent another £10 on yet another pair of ear plugs which probably don't work. I'm exhausted and I have to work. I can't switch rooms, it'll just be passing the problem onto my kid. Any ideas, please?

Though ultimately they can ignore any orders and do what they want, without much comeback.

I'm strongly tempted, but they are an end of terraced so they will know it's me. I'm trying to think of a 'nicer' way to sort it first. They have their TV on in the bedroom until 4am, some nights I can hear every word of the TV programme, the husband's out at work by 07:20 (I don't always hear him but he does the same thing every day), dog's barking from 07:30, I'm knackered. I've no idea how they can manage on so little sleep. I hear the other side but only a very little.

What's more important to you, them knowing you've complained or the problem being addressed?

Sleep!! I'll see if the new ear plugs work and I'll give the council a call if they don't. Thank you :)

Are you using over the counter earplugs? Tailor-made ones might be more comfortable. Not cheap, but for a good night's sleep it may be worth it.

I love dogs but cannot understand owners who let their dogs bark incessantly.

Noise cancelling headphones are expensive, but I find they are worth every penny.
I once had a neighbour who would play loud music late at night. I resorted to playing my stereo when I went to work, they got the message.

Noise cancelling headphones (£100) Foam (£4.00), then silicon (2 sets, neither worked £8.99 + £5.99) , now pluggerz (£8.99). I'll send them the bill if I have to buy any more. This is on top of the £120 a day job I lost because they were making so much noise that I couldn't concentrate.

My kid uses them, and has trashed about 5 pairs while they are sleeping. I sleep on my side so they aren't great. I work from home and the neighbour on the other side's considerate so I'm stuck really. I'd pump the music out if I wasn't so tired and needing to sleep during my breaks after being woken so much by the dog.
