12 Best-Selling Electric Vehicles of 2021 (So Far)

Tesla totally dominate this market with the TM3 and Model Y but the fact they do maybe says something about the EV market in the US. I suspect that people desire a Tesla more than they desire an EV. (Wait for the comments)

Good to see the Nissan Leaf hanging in there in 5th place despite all the bad press it gets for lack of a BMS.

Do you know how cheaply you can get a leaf in the US?!
    I think....

Why would anyone buy a FCEV when it costs more, and doesn't offer any fuel savings?
At present, it is the capital outlay for like-for-like vehicles.

If I were to buy an EV, it would be TM3 LR - around £50k or the MG5 LR (around £30k)  Few incentives available (noted the MG "affinity" scheme, but I would not qualify.

An equivalent ICE to the TM3 might well be the Lexus ES Premium, around £32k after scrappage offers.

The Lexus and the TM3 both pitch as "premium" whereas the MG pitches as "mid-range" (some might say that is being generous).

So, on the comparison, the EV has to make up the best part of £20k in reduced running costs to reach break even.  It may then return a better residual value but, for someone like me that keeps cars until they are deceased, residual value is always nominal.

I could add the full range of regular (rather than hybrid) ICE's, but then the cost justification for the EV only gets worse.
I have just gone from Golf GTE to ID3. Similar size, spec and performance with very little difference in price

I think I once read of one for $12500 after local and National credits. You would think that with electric cars being so cheap they would sell like hot cakes (even if only as second cars) but there isn’t much demand for them, only Teslas.

Just had a nose around a Porsche Taycan Turbo, gorgeous car, in powder blue. It was parked in the warehouse of a biomass plant in the S. Wales valleys, and the owner (car and business) was happy to show me around it, then chat about the Tesla, and then when I said how much I loved 'heavy plant' as a kid, he showed me around all the big yellow boy toys with JCB on the side, and the processing plant too. Such a pretty car, and a surprise tour too.

My neighbour has both a Taycan and a 911 but I only ever hear him driving the 911.😉

Whilst Norway's Gov have a target (not yet a ban per se) on new ICE car sales in 2025, the trend here suggests sales will be close to zero in 2022. But those calcs still include ~10% hybrids.

Norway bans gas cars in 2025. But trends point toward 100% EV sales as early as April

Norway’s Road Traffic Council reports monthly sales figures for all cars sold in the country, so we have accurate reports on just how many new cars of each powertrain choice get sold. In the most recent accounting, cars without any type of electrification made up less than 10% of new car sales, down from about 21% the year prior.

If the trend present for the last few years continues, the trend line will hit zero in April 2022. This is a lot earlier than their 2025 target (which, to be clear, is not a legal requirement yet, more of a soft target agreed upon by Norway’s government).
As Motor.no acknowledges in their article, the very last gas car probably won’t be sold in April 2022. Not every car segment has a good selection of vehicles yet, and there are always some exceptions.

But there is a clear trend that outside of these few exceptions or niche vehicles, there will probably not be many mass-market sales of non-electrified vehicles. Norway might even allow limited numbers of gas car sales to continue past 2025, with the expectation that numbers might be small enough that a legislative ban really won’t matter either way.

BP rations fuel deliveries to petrol stations

Oil giant forced to close some sites and warns ministers that supplies at forecourts are 'declining rapidly'

There we were, just recently, saying we have never had a problem turning up at a fuel station and filling up. How quickly things can change.

Never say never; we just don’t know what’s around the corner.

    Lack of drivers? Wow.
Deliveries are being reduced across much of its network to cope with the low driver capacity.
Exxon Mobil said a “small number” of forecourts it operates for Tesco were also affected by driver shortages.
Fuel tanker drivers are among the most skilled (and highly paid) in the trade. If BP and Exxon can't get drivers there's no hope for the lower-paid end of the logistics world.

Are we going to see toilet rolls effect - the rumour of petrol shortages might be self-fulfilling even if deliveries are normal?  What a shame I have an EV so am not worried in the least.
    I think....
