Any UK people know how much a replacement would be over here? I'm quite tempted by a second hand leaf but the dealer prices quoted for new batteries have been obscene.
I take it this is who JkenH was referring to .....

    Still fairly steep prices.
Yeah not half, 8k for a 40kwh. Ouch.

Though thinking on, if you were to pick up a cheap second hand leaf for say £6k and then spend £8k on the upgrade, you would have a decent range for £14k.

Leaf is a great wee car, if it had 3 times the range. It would be an awesome car

    4kw sse since 2014 and 6.6kw wsw / ene split since 2019

the point being that you could get a 2 year old 40kwh for 17k so for just 3k more you get something 5 years newer that will no doubt retain more of the total cost than your 14k 40kwh in an 8 year old car.
    I think....

I think if that was readily the case, then that would be a good point, but its far from readily the case.
Most 2 year old 40kwh leafs are 20k plus and so the difference in price to get the same range is £6k.

Unless of course its a leaf with high mileage, then you are no longer buying the 40kwh range, you are buying a reduced range, same as a £6k earlier model.

The other thing is how you view your purchase, if you are someone who regularly changes vehicles and see this as a trade in option, then the sums would never add up, but if you see this as a long term workhorse then depreciation means nothing,  and so the cost is purely for the range.

The wife loves her leaf, its got all the toys, it's a great colour and she is comfortable driving it.
I could probably keep it till it dies.
If I could spend say another £10k to make it 62kwh.... that would be really pretty tempting.

    Horses for courses.

As a complete aside and purely because I looked at leaf prices there, my 2015 leaf seems to be worth pretty much exactly the same as what I bought it for 2 years ago 😯

Example: I have a 24kwh with 50k miles.  I could spend 8k at electron garage upgrading the battery to 40kwh but I would still have a car worth at most 10k, or I could sell my car for 7k and spend 10k more upgrading to a 2018 40kwh with 20k miles worth 17k.
I just want to check on these maths - do they take the old pack off you or do you get to keep it, because it would still have a value, say, £4k for a Leaf battery with still, say, 20kWh in it?

It may be worth looking at this topic on SpeakEV concerning Battery Upgrades.

I might be wrong, but I think this is the first time that BEV's (not PEV's) have topped 50% in Norway. That seems like a momentous milestone to me.

Norway In August – Over 70% EV Market Share And Heading Higher

Clean transport transition leader Norway hit a huge 70.2% plugin passenger vehicle market share in August, up from 49% a year ago. Pure battery electrics alone took 53% of the market. September is already showing signs of being a record breaking month with the Tesla Model 3, VW ID.3, and Polestar 2 all showing up in volume.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Some great news items for BEV's.

First we have the French results for August, and the eye popping news that they are looking good for ~10% PEV sales this year, v's around 2.6% last year. I smell disruption!

France Hits 10.5% EV Market Share In August — Up 4× Year On Year

The 10.5% total plugin in vehicle share comprised 5.4% pure battery electrics (BEVs) and 5.1% plugin hybrids (PHEVs).

Next we have a collection of news stories on electric buses. Worth remembering that e-buses are having a big impact on FF sales already, so any good news about them (and hopefully heavy freight soon) is most welcome.

And coming in under the 'No sugar Sherlock' category, we have news that electric vehicles are better for the environment (v's FF)

Electric Vehicles “Have Significantly Lower Impacts On The Climate,” New In-Depth Report Finds

“Ricardo experts in sustainable transport — alongside specialists from E4tech and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg (ifeu) — have delivered an innovative and comprehensive lifecycle assessment of road vehicles on behalf of the European Commission,” the Ricardo team writes.

“Our assessment has shown that over their entire life-cycle in the EU, new electric vehicles are expected to have significantly lower impacts on the climate compared to conventional combustion engined vehicles,” commented Nikolas Hill, project manager and knowledge leader in transport technology and fuels in Ricardo’s sustainable transport team.

Impressive numbers from Sweden again, with PEV's at 28% and BEV's at a mighty 8%.

Sweden In August – 28% Plugin Vehicle Market Share, Up 3x Year-On-Year

Sweden continued to grow its plugin electric vehicle market share in August 2020, reaching 28%, up from 8.7% in August 2019. The overall auto market showed recovery, down just 13% from an unusually strong August last year. Swedish plugin electric vehicle market share is still headed for 30% over full year 2020.
