Redistribution is an easy sell. No need to work to achieve anything.

Labour are going to redistribute wealth from the super rich to the poor.

Lower rents and house prices when they bring in right to buy for private tenants with all sorts of help for poor people to get funding to buy their home from their landlords.

Free fibre broadband to get everybody in work, even those who used to claim sick pay now they can work from home at least a little every week no matter how ill they are.

FOUR DAY WORK WEEK FOR ALL. Government funding for all companies to take on my staff to cover the same work load in less days, and every body gets the same pay for less work.

The economy will get a big boost because people wil be out spending money on the day off:T

Simple, socialist governments always win the most votes because everybody loves free stuff,

Labour just has to create billions of units of currency out of thin air and give it to the poeple not the banks

How do you think units of currency are usually made?

May as well give them to the people that need them, for once.

If you are on minimum wage and the government increase the minimum wage by 25% then yes. Of course a huge number of people who are earning above minimum wage will be paid less, potentially 20% less!

Why would they get paid less? Studies have shown that productivity increases working less, so you could get paid more.

We have a large service industry, all the "customer support" type roles where you can't be more productive working less hours.

Why can't you be more productive? If you require 100 people at the current level of productivity but a happier more motivated work force can deal with calls 25% quicker then you can cut how many you have on shift at any one time. If you've never worked in a customer support department run by a tyrant then you probably won't get it. If you only have one person dealing with calls five days a week then yes it'll be a problem, but then you've got more problems if they are ever sick or on holiday.

Incredible how the socialists are now so big on productivity gains.
Not so big on it when it’s technology that drives productivity and puts people out of jobs though are they.

No no it’s keeping the same staff on the same money but for four days that’s going to drive the economy forward (except the NHS of course as they have to still work five days). What a load of twaddle.

It’s a model that works fine in a small number of industries for all the rest that are still operating five or six or seven day models it’s just more and more cost.

If I ran a company in one of those industries and my labour costs jumped by 20% with no (Or marginal) equivalent turnover increases I’d be looking at way of reducing that workforce pretty bloody quick.

Another great plan from the socialists there.

    Which studies are these?
  • I somehow feel OP was writing tongue in cheek and having a laugh as he/she has not returned to comment and probably just enjoying reading the back and forth that has ensued.

It certainly read like a right-wingers lampoon piece.

Because most people in this country get paid on an hourly rate not a productivity rate?

How many studies? Was this productivity increase across all sectors of the work force? Obviously it cannot have been so, yes, a huge number of people will be paid less if they only work a four day week.

All sounds great in theory but in practice is very different and your 25% productivity boost is just pie in the sky.

I am guessing you have never ran a company? As it happens I had just over 100 employees in my old company, so I have some direct experience of your specific example; I can categorically state that for the vast majority of my staff a four day week would have resulted in absolutely zero productivity increases.
