HSBC Fraud Query

Hello all - I've recently been the victim of a series of fraudulent transactions made from my bank account. I checked my bank balance one evening and saw that my available balance was zero - I contacted HSBC straight away and they told me that £1300 worth of transactions had been made to 2 betting companies (Betway and Bet 365) - I told them that I had not made these transactions and passed me over to the fraud team.
Long story short - the fraud team refunded my money on a 'provisional' status whilst they investigated the transactions - This was over six weeks ago now.
I thought this matter would be resolved very quickly, as I assumed it would be clear that these transactions were not made by me (I have never used accessed these websites before, and never been over my overdraft limit in over 20 years of banking with HSBC) - but it seems like they are still investigating?!
Is there any chance they may take the money back away from me? I feel like I have the sword of Damocles hanging over me just waiting for them to 'steal' my money back from me!

Possibly.
What did they say when you contacted them before posting on here?0 -
They must refund the money to you unless they can show that you were complicit in some way, but I'd have thought that it's unusual for an investigation to drag on like this. Does any of the rest of the long story give any clues about the potential complexity, i.e. exactly how were the transactions made, what sort of breach is involved (e.g. online banking versus debit card, PIN/CVV-verified or not, etc), how can you prove that it was nothing to do with you, etc?
It's not actually your responsibility to prove that it wasn't you, it's theirs to prove it was, but paying sites you haven't paid before and not having been overdrawn previously aren't particularly compelling by themselves to be honest, it's more about the fundamentals of whether you (or someone with access to your card or account) did so this time.0 -
Has the card left your possession or lent it to someone at some point ?0

but it seems like they are still investigating?!0

They have given me no indication as to how they think the money has been accessed. I live alone and at no point has the card been out of my possession. I have spoken to them via Live Chat today and they confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.0

Well given you got the refunds from them over 6 months ago. It will be resolved. HSBC will have claimed t he money back from the sites as a fraud chargeback.
They then have 45 days to contest the chargeback. If they do not or have with details that are not yours then they have lost the case.
Clearly after 6 months they are well passed that timescale.
HSBC like many other banks do not call you to advise of the outcome unless the details match and they need to advise you of this.
It's a simple matter of no news if good news as I say to customers with fraud on their accounts.Life in the slow lane0 -

Thanks for this - Stupid bloody me put 6 months in the original post when I actually meant 6 weeks!0 -
This should be readily apparent. How do the transactions appear on your statement? Wht sort of transactions are they?
It does not state what sort of transactions they are explicitly. They were made online (rather than going into a betting shop).
I have no idea how the fraudsters would have access to my account details, especially the three digit code on the back of my code which would be required to make online bets?0 -

It must specify what sort of transations they are. Faster payment, cheque, debit card etc.
Assuming the payments were made by debit card, then yes you are correct about the 3 digits on the back of your card being required. Are you sure nobody has access to your card? From reading your previous posts I see you have a rather troublesome young lady in your family. Could she perhaps be involved in this?0
