Energy: Find the cheapest supplier & earn cashback

  • We're just buying a 3 bed victorian terraced house, and therefore don't have any current suppliers to switch from. How do I go about finding which would be the cheapest if I have nothing to compare it to?

We're a couple who'll be in the house during evenings and weekends It's got gas central heating with a combi boiler. I have the last bill from the person who lived there before, he was living on his own and was with NPower or both gas and electric, could I use this to get a rough estimate or to use on the comparison sites?

Any help to put me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Edit: Okay, very new to this so didn't know that you actually have to take on the energy provider from the previous owner, and then you can switch after that. So we have to go with nPower for approx the first 6 weeks which is usually how long it takes to swap.

Am I being very naive but couldn't I just look at the rates applicable for my area to find out which provider is the cheapest for me? As long as the cut-off points are the same for the higher and lower rates? (ie XXXp for the first 900 kWh, XXXp thereafter?)

I used the previous owners last bill to work out roughly how much my bills might come to, and using the comparison sites, both energyonline and moneysupermarket say edf is the cheapest option. But it says their electricity rate is 9.902p for the first 900kWh, then 5.964 thereafter. Looking at some of the others, this is CONSIDERABLY cheaper (E.On is 17.168p then 9.419). Does anyone else think that there may be a mistake, and edf's prices are not up to date? When I looked at their website, adn their tarifs, I couldn't find this one, the one I found was more expensive.

    HELP!

  • Hi,
Can I double check that the uSwitch wine offer is current. I was about to switch through them to get the wine but checked their T&Cs and it said you have to switch before 31 Jan 2008 to qualify. Have they started a new offer? Or have they not updated their T&Cs? If there is no current wine offer, then maybe this shouldn't be advertised at the moment on MSE.

Can anyone let me know please?

    Thanks
  • Hi,
A word of warning about switching via moneysupermarket.com. - they will not give you more than one dollop of cashback. I used them to switch dual fuel 18 months or so ago and received £30 cashback - I used them again last Autumn and, on enquiring why I had not yet received my £30 for switching, was told that, as stated in their T&Cs, any given household will only qualify for 1 cashback - for all time!
Unless I have missed it on Martin's Gas and Elec switching page, this is not made clear
  • I have just been on uswitch, energyhelpline and moneysupermarket. All of them tell me that EDF will be best for me on dual fuel.
I see that moneysupermarket is listed on quidco with £20 cashback

If I go via quidco to moneysupermarket and change supplier will I get £20 from quidco and the £30 for switching duel fuel through moneysupermarket = £50 ?

I'd hate to go through quidco get £20 but miss out on the £30 if it's not allowed.

    Thank you for your help.

I'm hoping that I'm reading the comparison site correctly (fingers crossed) and it appears to be recommending that I stay with Eon for my postcode and gas/elec useage. I'll double check it again later to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong :j .

Watch out for E-ON charging extra, although I'm not sure if all providers make this charge :-

"As your gas supply is maintained by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT), rather than Transco, you'll incur an additional annual charge of £42 per year"
  • Have just swicthed using Uswitch who have an advert on their homepage for the free wine offer also, however once swicthed and you read the terms it expired on 31 Jan! Thats a bit misleading of them........ (have emailed to complain)

I emailed uswitch and they responded to say the offer had been extended. Apparantly they have been inundated with emails from MSE users!!!:money:

I do not see any advert on their home page for free wine, can you post the link you are using. I only see this free wine offer if I follow the MSE link?

As Martin is promoting this offer on his front page, should he not clarify if it is still available?
