I have been using AVRO Gas & Electric for the last 3 years.
My contract is now up for renewal.
I did the Cheap Energy Club Comparison check hoping to find a decent deal.
AVRO did not appear in the first 50 results for next years supply.
AVRO have always been competitive, so I went to the AVRO website to find the currently available Fixed rate tariffs for the next 12 months.
When doing a manual (spreadsheet) comparison, the new AVRO tariff was better than most of the tariffs quoted on the Cheap Energy Club search.
I decided that the Energy club comparison must be flawed.
I updated my details on the Cheap Energy Club website with my new AVRO tariff for 2019/20.
Now when I run the comparison only 3 companies beat my new tariff , and only by a few pounds per year.
Conclusion: Always do more research, never trust comparison site searches alone.

    Something is indeed flawed

I see that iChoosr have omitted the best rates from Ebico, my supplier, no doubt because they are cheaper.
  • Just a quick bit of advice, I noticed that Eversmart Energy quote prices exclusive of VAT where as most companies quote with VAT included! This makes Eversmart not a cheap as they appear!

Welcome to MSE. Well a belated welcome, as I see you joined almost 12 months ago. Sorry you didn't have time to hang around.

Thanks for the advice, but if you follow the directions used in the article linked to in post#1, and use a comparison site to try to obtain cashback, then all the comparison sites will show the all the tariffs of all the suppliers in the same format (usually inc VAT, but the comparison site will specify if not).

You will not get cashback by going direct to any supplier site.
(although I'm not sure if any comparison site offers cashback for this new, small supplier either)

On a positive note, at least I see you have already received at least your first thanks too, :T by MSE user (I-LUV-MONEY) who logged in specifically just to thank your inaugral post within just 10 mins of you making it. Maybe it was second sense?

It was purely coincidence that I logged in soon after Dante's post. I get an e-mail from MSE when there is a new post and as I was online at the time, I looked at it.

But for thanking me, I will give you a thanks as well - you can buy me a drink if we meet !!!
Thank you for reading this message.

anyone have any idea when the next big mse switch might be? The last one was in February...
  • I used CEC to get on a 2 year fixed deal with OVO Energy and that's about to come to and end on Oct 3rd unfortunately :-(

I'm looking to switch out and although not the cheapest on the list it looks like EDF might be a winner...I thought about the side-benefits of becoming a British Gas customer again, e.g. free Sky movies. Any thoughts please?

My main question, however, is can I plan for my activation with EDF to happen the day after my OVO ends? I'm within 49 days of my contract ends so it's not an exit charge question but OVO are cheaper in comparison so I'm just trying to make the most of my current contract.

    Thanks all!

Well, you have two options, as I see it.

    (1) EDF is signed up up to the 21-day switch guarantee so you could time your switch request to be 21 days before your contract ends.

    (2) Ovo is required by the terms of its licence conditions to keep you on your current tariff until the switch completes "within a reasonable period" providing they are advised of your switch request "through industry channels" sooner than 20 days after your current contract ends.

The problem is that reports on here suggest Ovo ignores this requirement so you may need to start their complaints procedure if the switch actually takes place after your Ovo contract ends
    .

EDF say it takes about three weeks so that gives a clue about when to apply.

However, there's always the risk that your chosen tariff may have been withdrawn by then !

You could always try phoning them to see whether they can agree to your preferred start date.

I believe that if you've started the switch before your old tariff ends, you may be entitled to keep paying the old rates until the switch has been completed.

I’m in a very similar position with Engie and a switch to a very competitive EDF 2 year fix tariff that includes half price boiler cover for the first year.

Difficult to tell which way prices are going at the moment - they seem pretty stable for now, barring international incidents and the fool we’ve been landed with as Prime Minister.
