I need guidance over a subtle detail. My current deal is due to run out in January, and I can switch without penalty, so the timing is ideal. My problem is that my current deal includes a free annual boiler service. I have a service booked for october 24th. It will be my second free service, but I have been in this deal for well over 2 years. My question is this: can I arrange a switch now, or am I likely to forfeit the boiler service?
I think you really need to go through the terms & conditions for the tariff you are on.

    Many thanks.

I'm guessing you're on the Scottish Power Platinum Fixed Energy January 2014 tariff?

If so, isn't there a penalty? And isn't it more than just a service - full boiler cover?

If I'm wrong about the tariff, I apologise. If I'm right, the transfer is unlikely to happen before your service is due, so you should be fine. :)

Currently on the Scottish Power Online Platinum Fixed Energy January 2014 v2 tariff. Good prices until the end of next January, of course, and free boiler cover, but the fixed price deals around now aren't going to be there in January.

NPower and EDF are both offering fixed price deals which run until the end of March 2017 (that's 4 winters!). The downside - it's around 14% more than an April 2015 fix. Anyone else thinking about this, and considering the options? :)

Moved my Dad to the EDF Fixed Price March 2017. It means we've secured something now and will continue to monitor the market as there aren't any exit fees. He's happy with the deal.

I was (until yesterday) on the EDf fixed tariff until March 2014, and rang them asking about moving to the 2017 fix, but after hearing that would be over £100 more for the next year, I decided to move to the 2015 fix which is almost the same cost as the one I was on until yesterday.

Bit of a wait (22 mins) in the queue, but as they are on 0800 it didn't cost owt, and the CS lady was pretty helpful in going through all the options available, so I'm happy.

EDF are clever at marketing their deals.. I had changed from the deal that ends on the 31 September 2013 to 31 September 2014. I did consider the September 2015 but it was a lot more expensive.

Given it's likely that energy prices will increase by something like 10% each year going forward, the 2017 fix might have been better for you in the long run.

We are with Ovo until mid-November. Is there a way I can compare what Ovo are offering, for a new one year fix, with the market?

Cheap Energy Club has FU fixed to 2015 as the only supplier that is cheaper (£7) but it is based on Ovo's present rates.

Clicked the submit button too soon!

Actually, I can work out the comparison based on the new Ovo quote and for 1 year fixed the difference is only about £5.

If I want to fix until 2017 with one of the others it will cost (yearly) anything between £240 and £280 pounds more.

That is why I need to borrow someone's crystal ball.

No crystal ball, but for what it's worth as an ex FU customer I can tell you that their customer service is very poor compared to even the worst of the big six. We had no choice as they were the supplier our new house builder used, communication with a human being was non existent.
