  • Another forum says the Onyk is NOT multi region? anyone tried yet?
  • Looking at the specs it doesn't appear it does, although I'm looking for a player that has a USB slot too.

There's some Phillips players that have USB available at Amazon for just over £40. Are there any cheaper ones about?

Check out the HDD media enclosures on tradestead and dealextreme eg

    http://www.tradestead.com/wholesale/portable-hdd-players/otg-2-5-inches-external-usb-hard-disk-media-player-mp4-divx-dvd-mp3-vcd-p-275.html

You'll also need to pick up a 2.5" laptop HDD from somewhere (ebuyer?). Needs to be 5400RPM and Ultra-ATA (eg not SATA).

Good little combo. A lot of guys at my work have these and it plugs straight into TV via RCA (if you only have SCART input then you will need to pick up an RCA -> Scart converter).

So basically you transfer all your avi / divx / xvid files (WMV doesn't work) onto the drive and then plug the drive straight into your TV when you want to watch stuff.

Good thing about these is you can take them round to a mates house, on holiday etc, so you always have a load of films and TV with you.

USB, DIVX, and a lot more! Also other models available, AND you can use Quidco!

A word of caution, as the original question was: "can I play videos off a USB memory stick?"

Several of my friends have divx players with USB, and none will play directly from a memory 'stick' as the transfer rate is too slow. You can read from it and view jpgs, that sort of thing. However, I know that at least one works successfully with a USB disk drive. Do some research before you buy to avoid disappointment.

If you really want to play via the USB, you can get an 80gb USB HDD for £43.95 from SVP.

OR.... if you have an old HDD lying around from your old PC, it can be turned into an external USB HDD by purchasing a caddy for £9.99! (£12.99 for a SATA drive), also from SVP.

    Hope this helps.

That's odd. I have one of the Philips ones and with a USB 2.0 Memory stick, it plays DivX just fine. Good shout about the Caddy though. I have a couple of 20gb drives floating about somewhere........

One of the other things I should also point out, I don't know if it's only Philips that has the problem but you can only format a drive with FAT32 under XP to 32gb natively (yeah, yeah, Partition Magic can do it etc.) so it means you're a bit stuck with a 500gb USB disk

For the person above who asked whether or not the Argos one will play DivX, I wouldn't put my mortgage on it, but I would say NO! As Martin's mail says this week, the cheapest DivX one is around £28.
The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.
  • - Power On
    - Open Tray
    - Press 9879 0 (0 stands for Multiregion, you may press buttons 1 to 6 to choose a specific region)
    - A Message appears stating that "The Reg.No was changed to: [whatever region you selected]"

That's all, now you can watch every DVD you please.

Its played every mpeg4 file I've thrown at it. I'm very impressed especially for the price:j

I have found a problem with the TV format though. I've got a widescreen TV and have set the player accordingly but any DVD that is in 4:3 format (eg old tv shows) is stretched to fit the screen rather than being shown in its original dimensions. There are a number of options within the players Video settings section (Original, Width, Height, etc) but none of them seem to work

I haven't a clue either! Just told my daughter what a bargain I've found & she says my telly's too old to use it-it hasn't even got a remote control! anyone know where I can get a bargain tv to use my new dvd player?

hi argos have a sale on tv`s at the moment a bargain price 1 is a 15" lcd tv at £79.99 i work in argos and we sold loads of these today a great xmas present and there were loads left
  • I know it's not the cheapest player out there but I haven't yet found any that have HDMI upscalling for this price and see to be this good.

The play in question is the PHILIPS DVP5960 DVD Player at £42.50 from Pixmania although Argos have it for £47.99 so if you reserve and buy in store that's cheaper as Pixmani charge for delivery.

Lots more info on the player can be found here:

  • hi tracy, appreciate the tip. I have 5000 nectar points so that should make it even cheaper-have a happy christmas :O)
  • I just bought the Mikomi dvd287 at my local argos... its def not multi region out of the box, and after three hours searching on the internet I can't find a hack to make it so. Anyone know what the craic is with this? Anyone made it multi reg yet?
  • I bought one each of the two Argos Mikomi players yesterday for a tenner a pop. The DS-5778C is better for picture quality: it supports RGB over SCART and progressive PAL over component both of which yield a noticeably better picture especially on LCD tellies. Unfortunately it's a top-loader so you can't stack it or pile things on top of it. The dvd287 is a front loader and looks nicer but will output only composite video, even through SCART so the image can be a tad fuzzy especially on menus and stuff with lots of bright colours (e.g. kids programmes). In terms of build quality you get exactly what you pay for with both, of course.
