Yep, that's pretty much how it usually is. However this year MSE seem to have gone for an utter car crash for Advents - this despite having volunteers to run / help / contribute with an Advent thread.
It just seems very self-centred to have the Advents hidden away. This despite more people voting to have an Advent thread, but even the Comp board guide (I Love Comps or something like that) is refusing to acknowledge that more people want an Advent thread than don't want an Advent thread.
I am quite saddened by the sheer selfishness and greed by many users. So much for it being a community.

In response to your comment above MaineBlue, this is not a MSE car crash, this was JUST ME trying to start the discussion. I am not going to be around, won't be entering or being involved in any way, and it's not 'hidden away' it's in Chat Corner which is where it's supposed to be at this stage.

I'm quite saddened by your comment about being saddened yourself by 'sheer selfishness and greed by many users' I assume aimed at me, and I think it's comments like yours that drive more and more people to not contribute in any way, and not to even get involved in helping out.

Although there is a poll attached to this thread (that ends in 2 days), surely there is nothing stopping anyone starting an Advent thread now there are volunteers to run it, but then I suppose that would be wrong for some.

I don't think it is being steered towards being hidden away. I'm not really sure how it could be hidden away?

I think there needs to be some sort of advent thread certainly, the people that are voting for no thread can just ignore it if they want to as I expect they usually do anyway. Now that there are several volunteers, maybe the poll is invalid anyway as there were no volunteers when this started?

Thank you Cornish for starting the Advents discussion and poll. This indeed shows that you have, or had, no intention of keeping the Advents hidden, but in fact, wanted to get people talking and the ball rolling!

The Advents are always posted on the main board anyway so I don't understand why some people are assuming they will be hidden away somewhere else this year!?

This thread has gone to a very strange place.
Thank you cornishpasty1 and all who contribute to to the competition forum. I wish you all good luck in your comping endeavours and hope you enjoy the time of year.

Had an e-mail from them which includes a notification of their advent comp but no link as yet. Have created a thread for it on the main board.

    Not aimed at you cornishpasty1.

But to clarify, this is what I mean by it being selfish to not have an Advent thread.

MSE is for everyone to use, and that includes the comping forum. That means people should be able to dip in and enter competitions, such as Advents.

Without any kind of Advent thread (and pinned) where they are all collated this is going to make it very difficult for the casual comper to find these competiton; unless they are expected to scroll back 100+ pages in the hope they find them all. Not exactly ‘for everyone’.

By not having an Advent thread this will suit many compers who do not wish the casual comper, or those who just don’t have time to search, and rely on an Advent thread. Why does it suit the more seasoned comper not having an Advent thread? Simple, less people enter the competitions, meaning they have a greater chance of winning – therefore selfish and self centered.

We have seen a desire to ‘hide’ competitions previously on MSE (for (I presume) this very reason).

The way the voting is set up is geared towards not having an Advent i.e it is split between 2 ‘have an advent thread’ and 1 ‘don’t have an advent thread’, Now, even though the ‘have an advent thread’ is currently at almost 60% the board guide (I quote has said):-
“At the moment the voting is for no advent thread - so this would mean Advents just being posted in Competition time with an A at the side.”
This is actually incorrect as there are more people wanting an Advent thread but the way the poll has been set up ignores this fact.

Furthermore, at present, the poll has a mere 131 votes, which is hardly telling of the volume of people who use the comping forum but is indicative of the volume of people who visit the chat area – i.e not taking into consideration casual compers, those who don’t visit that section or those who didn’t see the thread or even understand what they were voting for.

Again, I stress this criticism and complaint of a selfish attitude amongst some compers is not aimed at you cornishpasty1 but like I said above, MSE is meant to be for all, but hiding Advents away by not having an Advent thread will ensure that fewer people enter these types of competitions, so yes it is totally self-centred to not want an Advent thread.

I appreciate my opinion will make me (even more) unpopular amongst the MSE Comping ‘clique’ but I fail to see any benefit of not having an Advent thread other than to make sure less people enter Advents.

And all this despite there being volunteers to run, manage, monitor an Advent thread.

As I have already stated it makes no difference to me if there is a thread or not
But if there are people who want to maintain a thread I don't see an issue with that and don't really consider that votes for "no thread" should have any real bearing if there are people prepared to run one.

Entries from MSE are often just a very small percentage of total entries to any decent competition so if there were fewer entries from here it would be almost irrelevant to someones chances of winning.

Added to that most Advents generally and in particularly the advent thread are only used by a small minority of forum users so the possible reduction in entries would be very small and any reduction supposes there are people who only use the thread and wouldn't enter without it.

I think, as suggested on the other post, that seperate threads would be ideal! (i.e facebook, web, twitter, insta) All individually - so 4 different posts.

That would obviously need 4 seperate volunteers though. Would love to be involved but so much more busier these days than i used to be!

Im a bit of a mish mash, where i do use the front page but then i also go through the main pages and the back pages!
Do good and good will come to you.
