Hi don’t know if I’m being daft but I don’t fully understand what an advent thread is?? I’m a new comper whos only been using the site since January
An Advent thread is something that happens every year where lots of people lose their sanity by very helpfully search everywhere from the web, supermarkets, cereal packets, down the back of the sofa, for Advent competitions that run every day (or almost) in the month of December.
Think of one of those advent calendars that we had as kids where sometimes, you'd get a day that's great, and others, you got a rubbish looking candle behind the cardboard door.
So, there will be a thread run by fantablous peeps that you go to and there will be comps on there to enter. It will be updated almost every day, and they will tell you what the prize is (could be anything from something brill, to a lousy 20% discount in you spend a squillion quid)
It's basically just like doing comps as normal, but it's Christmas, so it *might* get a bit more busy.
Bear in mind, that in recent years, some of the prizes are a bit naff, and Social Media seem to get the bulk of them. Those are the places where all the Cliques get together and moan about 'not regular compers' win more than them. DON'T let that put you off. You have just as much chance to win as them. And some do very well throughout the year. It's December when, instead of stocking up on Chocolate Oranges, they stock up on sour grapes instead.
Hope this clears it up a bit for you. Just enter which ever ones you want and keep everything crossed. and, more importantly..........Have fun.
As a bonus, look out for all the sob stories that will pop up in the hopes that their entry will win a bar of chocolate. (yes, it's that sad sometimes)
And, hopefully, the legendary 'Stick Man' will make an appearance on here as well. It was sorely missed last year.
Be Lucky.BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.
comping = nowt more thrillin' than winnin':T :j0 -

There are two advents to add to the new Advents thread:
A: 24/12 ? Normandy Hotel Glasgow (FB) https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6068808/a-24-12-normandy-hotel-glasgow-fb&highlight=glasgow
A: 24/12 Visit Doncaster (FB/IG) https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6066823/a-24-12-visit-doncaster-fb-ig&highlight=doncaster
Would it be possible for someone to add them to the other thread, because for some reason I can't insert links in text, and I don't want to mess up the style of the thread by posting them like they look above! Thanks!
Also the Daily Echo advent may need removing from the list as it is from 2015 (unless they run another advent this year).0 -
As above, could somebody add this to the new Advents thread, thank you.
A: 12/12 Toast - Beneath The Tree (weekly) https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6069642/a-12-12-toast-beneath-the-tree-weekly
(And if someone could let me know how to put the link in the text I would be very grateful! I highlight the text and click on the 'Insert Link' button but nothing happens; no box to put the web address pops up or anything.)0 -
Posted for you, You need to paste the title, ie;
A: 24/12 Visit Doncaster (FB/IG)
Then highlight title and click the globe icon (it says insert link when you hover on it), remove the http:// and paste your url ie;
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6066823/a-24-12-visit-doncaster-fb-ig&highlight=doncaster
and click ok.
Which inturn would turn
A: 24/12 Visit Doncaster (FB/IG)
into
A: 24/12 Visit Doncaster (FB/IG)#JusticeForGrenfell0 -
Thank you for adding the advents to the list toniq. Thanks also for the instructions; that's what I've been doing but unfortunately when I click on the globe icon nothing happens, no box with a URL pops up, nothing... It doesn't like me for some reason...or maybe it doesn't like Internet Explorer. When I can find my password (or if I change my password) for MSE I'll log in on Chrome and see if it will let me do it there...0

Nobody and nothing likes Internet Explorer!0

For the few I post I cheat and start by quoting a post that is already set up (it's easier than it sounds)cornishpasty1 wrote: »A: 24/12 Daily Echo[ /URL]
Remove the bits that make it a quote
A: 24/12 Daily Echo[ /URL]
then just replace the thread number and title with with the ones you want
A: 12/12 Toast - Beneath The Tree (weekly)[ /URL]
Which gives you
A: 12/12 Toast - Beneath The Tree (weekly)0 -
I am confused are the advents going to be on the main board daily or do we just go through the advent thread daily or can we do either0

My understanding is nobody offered to compile a full front page list and keep it up to date. Whilst one or two people volunteered to help out if the task could be split, there were not enough volunteers to make it manageable. So now people have the choice of bookmarking any they want to enter, either from the main board or the list that people add to that is not sorted, or they sort the main board so that all those starting wit A: are in one place and work from that, or they develop their own system in a way that works for them.0
