  • Medication delivered by 9.45am. Strange how they manage to get it to me in 14 hours when there's an official complaint in the works, but couldn't manage it for a month beforehand. Went straight into the fridge.

Bed stripped and remade. Offcut of carpet shuffled underneath my side, too.

    Plants watered.

Clean washing sorted and mine has been put away [strike]for a change[/strike].

This had better be the last time this happens. The friend turned up (again) at 3pm and they've been editing/recording ever since, as apparently there's a gig on Friday night and, as himself has apparently refused to participate, he's creating a backing track for them. On his one day off this week/my week off - it's been an entire month like this now and he knows I am not pleased about this.

I am taking my laptop to bed with me and hoping to go to sleep soon.

  • Slept in ridiculously late today.

I have cleaned the sink and made the bed, plus microwaved some rice and bean thing.

I need some help with deciding upon priorities. These are things that we/I need/want, but I have limited time, energy and money in which to achieve them. What should I prioritise?

It's getting colder. I think a rug downstairs would help. There's one for £35 in the Swedish Place. This would involve a 45 minute trip, plus probably a cab home, as I will inevitably get a replacement frying pan, plants and other such things whilst I'm there.

I need some comfortable lace up shoes for work. I despise clothes and shoe shopping at the best of times, but have a hell of a job finding suitable ones online. I also need some knitwear for work as I'm too cold at my desk and M&S was rubbish, Primark is hell on earth (and rubbish, I've already looked) and the odds are that they'll only get shrunk in the wash anyhow.

The garden needs hacking back. I need some shears, loppers and a way of storing the prickly stuff, as the burner is already loaded with (damp) stuff from earlier this year.

The microwave is a monstrosity that's rusting inside.

The oven is either off or hotter than the surface of the sun, but this requires engaging a sparks to install a replacement after purchase.

I miss having a dishwasher and not having to rewash plates that he has dipped into cold, slightly greasy water. If I get one, Himself can install it, but this means moving the fridge and freezer out into the main area of the kitchen. I'd like to cover them with some sort of worksurface, which would also require legs, so that the loss of space is mitigated by gaining a second work surface.

    The mattress is beyond redemption.

There isn't any carpet in the bedroom and the flooring is just hardboard panels. There is a giant rug in there, plus an offcut of landing carpet.

The settee and armchair are both knackered/shredded by the FluffyBum Cat (you'd think the Idiot Cat would do it, but no, he sticks to the wooden kitchen table leg and never touches the other furniture) and need covering.

Himself's position is that it's up to me, but he's perfectly happy without any of these things. In fairness, we have managed without them, but it's not particularly comfortable doing so.

JoJo, I'm not sure where in the country you are, but if you are a 50 mile for so drive from me, I'll come and help with the garden and bring tools, but for some reason I think you are upnorth.

I think I would go for the microwave first,

    then the shoes,
    then mattress,
I would look on ebay for 2 x rugs, which inc delivery, check the size, to save the bus / taxi.

I've been beautified (ok waxed, legs, chin etc), been into town to get jeans and replace my little boots. Only extra thing I bought were thick tights which I needed and they hadn't had my size last time I went. Plus lunch and a natter with a friend.

Jojo I would definitely go for shoes as cold or wet feet are the pits. I've just replaced my brown lace up flat ankle boots because they were worn out, inside and outside and i got wet feet last week. I do wear them most days from October to April and have done so for several years so know they will get the wear even if the price was aaagh! Look out microwave on offer locally in small adds. Likewise for rugs and furniture.

A few bits of admin to tidy away and WM to go on.

    First a cup of tea

    What should I prioritise?

It's getting colder. I think a rug downstairs would help.. See if you can get a friend to take you.. share fuel cost.. it is cheaper than a 45 minute taxi. It might even be cheaper to hire a car or van and drive yourselves. Delivery is extortion!

Knitwear.. Dorothy Perkins.. quidco cashback and they have sales every 5 minutes.. roomy sizes and washes well. I like Next but always buy a size bigger and only ever in the sale. I have very specific knitwear criteria. Shoes.. Hush Puppies or skechers.. you're going to live and die in them.. pay a bit more for comfort.. you are on your feet most of the day every day you owe yourself that much!

The garden needs hacking back. I need some shears, loppers and a way of storing the prickly stuff, as the burner is already loaded with (damp) stuff from earlier this year. Delegate.. Himself can do that.. you lop whenever you get time or or point and command.. I there are usually chaps on FB groups who will come do a slash and burn jobby for a few quid. Have a look at skill swap groups too.. you could maybe offer Himself and his many talents in payment for some garden hacking.

The microwave is a monstrosity that's rusting inside. If it is rusty it is not safe.. bin it.. check out car boots and SH shops.. freecycle always have LOADS on here.. stick a wanted ad on.. check out FB marketplace..

The oven is either off or hotter than the surface of the sun, but this requires engaging a sparks to install a replacement after purchase.. It doesn't.. it is supposed to but it is 2 wires.. it's not rocket science. If your house is rented the landlord may have a (not so) handy chap who would do it.. My daughter paid £40 for hers to be fitted, she isn't as foolhardy or reckless as I am lol See if there are any apprentices who want the experience.. you never know! Ask around friends too, everyone knows someone who owes them a favour.

I miss having a dishwasher and not having to rewash plates that he has dipped into cold, slightly greasy water. If I get one, Himself can install it, but this means moving the fridge and freezer out into the main area of the kitchen. I'd like to cover them with some sort of worksurface, which would also require legs, so that the loss of space is mitigated by gaining a second work surface. hhmmm.. I would move the appliances now and the space would irritate me into sourcing a DW. Again look at FB marketplace.. I picked one up for £40. The worktop could be purchased later when finances allowed.

The mattress is beyond redemption. I just got a £1300 mattress from Wowcher for £185.. they get some blooming good bargains but you have to bide your time and watch for them.

There isn't any carpet in the bedroom and the flooring is just hardboard panels. There is a giant rug in there, plus an offcut of landing carpet. That would distress me.. do you have a caravan outlet/supplies place? They often have rollends or full rolls when they changed their design or supplier and the remainder is not needed.. it's cheap and cheerful and very durable usually. Most carpet shops have a roll end section too.. get prices and see what you can muster, for me this would be low in priority.

The settee and armchair are both knackered/shredded by the FluffyBum Cat (you'd think the Idiot Cat would do it, but no, he sticks to the wooden kitchen table leg and never touches the other furniture) and need covering. Old retro curtain from chazzer.. and a heavy duty stapler! Make it funky until you can afford to replcace. Dunelm sell cushion foam if that needs replacing more urgently it might be a cheaper option. Again we have a few charity orgaisations selling sofas/furniture dirt cheap if it's worth looking. and freecycle and marketplace often have loads on cheap. I'd sort my seat first and the rest when I got around to it!

Himself's position is that it's up to me, but he's perfectly happy without any of these things. In fairness, we have managed without them, but it's not particularly comfortable doing so.

    What would you do first?

    shoes and knitwear first,
move stuff out of kitchen.. thats free.
Carpet/rug in living room for warmth.
Microwave and dishwasher ~ for safety and health and easier life

oven ~ more expensive than the microwave so I would have to save up so it is lower on the list but very important for safety.

mattress ~ very expensive but comfort is necessary and a good nights sleep which doesn't result in pain is imperative.

sofa ~ If it is structurally sounds and just cosmetic covers/throws are a cheap and easy solution until a replacement can fit in the budget.

bedroom carpet ~expensive and disruptive and not really impacting your life so it can wait until the finances allow.
Garden.. meh.. it's pretty irrelevant to me.

Jojo, can I also recomend good thermal underwear under whatever you have, keep those draughts out. I have a couple of vests that are very faded and grey now but come out every winter.
