  • 020 3769 2499 “Alex” just called back with another phone line this time shows as a landline yet that too keeps cutting out - ironic for a mobile network selling company. Yes ok spoofed but hopefully someone will recognise it and be aware it is the same scam hence why

I had a call from someone from a London number with an Indian accent claiming to be from Carphone Warehouse, and saying he could get me a good deal for a new phone. I've previously bought a phone from CW, so didn't think too much about them phoning me. I told them I am happy with the phone I've got and I've only had it for a few months, so I'm still under contract. He asked what phone I've got and I told him an S20 Ultra 5g, and he replied saying he could get me the S21 Ultra 5g, and they would pay off the remainder of my contract.  When I pointed out that that would be over £1000 and laughed, he hung up on me.

The thing is, I got my current phone from phones.co.uk, who I'd bought my previous phone from, who phoned me and they paid off the last 3 months of my contract. If I'd been a lot nearer the end of my contract I might easily have been taken in by the Carphone Warehouse scam.  Is there any easy way of finding out if one of these calls is a scam or not?

If in doubt, just hang up, wait a few minutes and then call Carphone Warehouse yourself.
  • I had one of those scam emails allegedly from Carphone Warehouse. Full of spelling errors and offering the world. I called them on the number they had given. A female answered the phone. She confirmed the unbelievable deal in the mail, and was in a bloody hurry to get me into  contract. I led her on a wild goose chase for fifteen minutes before asking her why she was spending her time cheating people. Asked her to think of her mother, father, child...needless to say she hung up in a hurry, but I had a quarter hour of satisfaction and pleasure at wasting that scammer's time.
