So, I popped back to have a look and still it's the same. People saying you absolutely MUST have known. Well I absolutely didn't, and that's that. While some of the knowledgeable women were chatting in the hairdressers or reading magazines, I was working in offices where I was often the only woman of my age, and sometimes the only woman full stop. That may be another reason it never came up in conversation. You can all say what you like, I am not lying when I say I did not know.
I do believe there are some women who weren't aware of the 2 changes.
But nowhere near as many that are claiming they didn't know.

I do believe there are some women who are in dire financial straits because of these changes.
But nowhere near as many that are claiming they are.

The women who are not telling the truth are doing a great disservice to those who were unaware and those who are in dire financial straits.

Blame them for the lack of automatic belief in women's stories.
That's the problem, though, it was never something on my radar to be doubted. Why would I think I needed to check something without being told? It's all over the place now, but it wasn't then. I do remember reading that the state pension age was going up IN 2020 (I still have that article somewhere), and I remember thinking phew I'll miss it because I retire in 2016. In early 2012 I telephoned them to check if I would need to top up my NI contributions for the last 4 years in order to get full pension. The answer was yes, a little but not much. Even he didn't tell me:-( I got a letter telling me in 2013.

    He probably thought you knew.
It was probably outside his remit to advise people of the changes if they simply rang to ask about voluntary NI contributions.

This is the point really. I was also all over the place then (93-96). I can remember very clearly it being regularly discussed all over the news, current affairs, newspapers etc etc. The reason you don’t remember any of it is because it wasn’t on you radar as being anything to be concerned about, as a consequence people just don’t absorb these things that either won’t affect them or at least won’t for another 20+ years. Even if letters had been sent they likely would have been read and instantly forgotten. Remember men havn’t been informed of their changes either (which in the case of people claiming pension credit was legislated at the same time).

As has been said numerous times, you don’t get told of legislation/law changes in any area, it’s up to you to take an interest in your future and act appropriately. Also most women in this group will be better off as they have opportunity for 5-6 years extra salary. Maybe those women in the group that worked these extra years would like to donate their ‘extra’ salary to the other WASPI women.
  • Whether someone knew or not is surely down to them?

I accept some women genuinely didn't know but I struggle why that should necessitate a £58bn black hole in the public balance sheet.

Also this is not compensation. Compensation is awarded by courts, regulatory bodies etc. This will be an entirely new, elective, payment that will be given to people based on their gender and age. It will not stand against any legal challenge at all.

... until someone takes them to court for not paying it to blokes born in the 1950's...
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries
  • that is exactly what I said
  • The good lady had three other ladies round last week all of them including the good lady hit by the legislation.

They were all complaining about it and said they had not been told about it at the time. I told them that there was pleny information about at the time and they all agreed that they knew about it those years ago.

I then said to them "if you were asked by someone if you knew about the legislation after agreeing with me that you knew about the legislation would you advise them that you knew about the legislation now".

Each one of them said "no we would still say that we did not know about the legislation change at the time".

    So there we have it.
    3 self-confessed liars.

So for all those posters - on this thread and all the others - now you know why you are not automatically believed when you say you didn't know.
Shame on all those lying women. :naughty:

An ex LGPS colleague assured me that she hadn't known - when I darn well knew that she knew nearly 20 years ago because we were already factoring in the changes in our LGPS calculations ! Then she admitted that when she had joined WASPE, she had been told to say that she didn't know in order to get her £30K cheque.

    A question for Hopeless123:
How do you feel about not being believed when you say you were unaware of the changes when you read posts #288 and 290?

Are you more angry with the women who are blatantly lying or those people who are sceptical because they know some women are lying when they say they really didn't know about the changes?
