I have dealt with a few insurance companies in the past. In many occasions they have tried to renew my insurance without me even ask them and sometimes in a very aggressive way.

Here is an example the text I receive from them.

"We are in the process of renewing your X insurance policy so you will benefit from continuous cover. Unless you have already paid, please ensure the card details we hold for you are correct and that you have sufficient funds to cover your renewal premium. Your policy number XXXXXX …..”

I used this insurance companies two years ago last year I used a different insurance company. So I did not get in touch with them for abut a year

How do I avoid text, email like this to be sent to me in the future? I now I could easily call them but I do not want to spend time unnecessary.

What do I need to do to make sure that they have no chance to take money from my credit card using the detail they have got without me need to contact them ??

I am assuming you opted in to their marketing emails? I would phone them and request that they opt you out of all correspondence.

As for the SMS text message content. I would be concerned that they are renewing your policy on a CPA from your card. I would also query that while I was on the phone with them...

Make sure that any CPA on the card is cancelled by both the merchant and the card issuer. :)

Thanks, I recieved the above quotation texted to my phone. That is also what I worry as they might use Continuous Payment Authority (CPA) to take money from money from my creditcard using the detail they have got.

To avoid this to happen in the future, what do I need to do / to watch when making payment by CC to prevent this to happen avoiding extra wotk to sort this out ?
  • Sorry, but you are going to have to contact the merchant (insurance company). Make sure with them that you policy is cancelled and that they immediately remove your CPA authority from their records. If the merchant has confirmed that the CPA was active, then either phone your card issuer or contact them via secure message to cancel the CPA at with your card provider too. :)

  • You can take out a policy that doesn't auto-renew, they must exist id have thought

Or if you take out a new policy and pay by card then call the card issuer shortly after paying and cancel any CPA that's been put in place, even a year in advance of any renewal.

One way or another you need to contact someone.

Be that either ins co (best) or card provider to cancel the CPA.

Only thing I would say is that with a insurance policy. They will try to take the funds from the card and it should be rejected. But that could lead to the revoking your insurance policy.
Which is something you have to declare on ALL insurance policies you take out, and will result in a increased charge.

eco_warrior. They do, as I can't remember the last time I had one that did.

  • They haven’t “tried to renew without asking”

The T’s and C’s likely say “unless you contact us to say otherwise we will continue your policy and charge you for it”.

You just need to contact them to say you don’t want to renew.

    It’s a 5 minute phone call every 12 months - it’s hardly back-breaking.

I'm not so sure about this. You often have to declare whether you've had insurance refused but isn't that all about your 'uninsurability', rather than your refusal to pay for a policy that you didn't want, or that you chose to cancel?

OP, take care when taking out all insurance policies. Many, in the payment stages, state quite clearly that the policy will be auto-renewed using the details you have provided. If you can manage your policy on line, you can usually alter this yourself (as you can also alter your marketing preferences), but if you have no online policy-handling, you will have to call them up.

I have seen it where it asks had any insurance policy Cancelled or Revoked. Which is where the insurance company cancel/revoke the policy due to not being paid or other some reason.

Hi Guys thanks for the advice.

I just checked my credit indeed they have taken money from my credit card while I already arranged another insurance.

But I manage to cnacel it as it is still within the cooling off period.

In the future what is the best practice to prevent this cheeky way to take to stop this CPA for subscrotiopn base payment without the need to be busy to call them again?

What about paying by Prepaid card or the like ?

You’ll get a renewal notice through email or post.

Call them and tell them you don’t wish to renew after receiving said notice.

It really couldn’t be any simpler than that.
