Train from Leeds to Birmingham (New Street) leaves at 11.10 arrives at 13.04, returning on 20th January 14.03 (arrives Leeds at 16.06) costs £43.10 The standard train return is £69.00
National Express from Leeds at 8.30:eek: arrives in Birmingham at 1pm (though that includes a change in Manchester), returning on 20th (leaving at 1.45, arriving leeds at 5pm) will cost £22 (non refundable) or £25 refundable & changeable!
Birmingham central travel lodge family room (sleeps 3 adults) costs £71 for the night for the room not per person.
Birmingham central broadway travel lodge family room currently costs £49 for the night (again sleeps 3 adults)for the room not per person!

Generally if you can get groups of people together you may be able to get a discount. However I have looked on the Cross Country website (XC run the trains between Leeds and Brum), and there is no mention of this. This may be because XC have only just taken over the route (this month). It may be worth asking.
