Just like you he has a family to feed and overheads for the garage, do you expect him to work for free? Then he has to pay tax on that gain, you haven't been ripped off, maybe you may have go it cheaper, but the running around may have offset any money 'saved'.
Out of interest, what do you think is a fair price to pay?
I think a fair price as you say would have been to take it to Toyota main dealer to have genuine parts fitted at a cost of £15 more than i paid to have to have cheap parts put in
we all pay tax!!0 -
I think she was charged a bit more than a 'mark up' on the parts.
I took my car elsewhere afterwards for tyres...thank heaven he had a problem ordering the tyres. (heaven only knows how much he would have put on them) SE tyres are great by the way...and mentioned the £160 cost for pads and discs and was told that was extremely steep...they hadnt even heard of juratek which he fitted.....i am angry - the whole idea was to try to save some money and he ripped me off. He charged me for one and a quarter hours labour when i had waited for the car and he wasnt working on it for it that long at all...
lesson learned...go to main dealership - jemca do fit genuine parts. you get what you pay for and i completely begrudge paying more than genuine toyota parts for cheap possible rubbish.
lesson learned.
(can i just mention the £160 is what he charged for the parts only...they cost £77 to buy and the rest of the £240 bill was for labour)0 -
If you were capable of taking brake pads out you would be doing the job yourself. So garages know that you won't be able to prove what brake pads were used. Taking it to a main dealer doesn't guarantee that they use genuine parts. Main dealers are out to make as much profit as possible too. If you can't do the job yourself the next best is to buy them yourself and watch a mobile mechanic fit them for you. My independent suggested I take my own but as you can see on this forum it might upset some garages hoping to make a killing by inflating parts prices.0

Don't get to eat up on the breakdown of the job, you still pay an overall price, sadly the dealers do not always use genuine parts.
EG when I have had a oil change service, they quote for 6*1L oil (yeah right like they don't have a100Ldrum of the stuff) they like to quote things like tyre 75% worn (meaning there is nearly 25% life left) , as for oil, some cars are fussy about the correct spec oil, my stealership hadn't used the correct oil as I noticed the exhaust tailpipe sooting up more than usual) my car is supposed to use C3 but they wish to sell B5, tyres, they wish to charge premium rates for mid range tyres …...0 -
honestly - you end up not trusting anybody.0

A lot of people get obsessed with "genuine parts". For example my car is made of VW parts with a Ford badge on it. The alternator is made by Bosch. If I needed a new one Eurocarparts would sell 2 alternators. One would be very cheap from a company you have never heard off. The expensive one would be the Bosch. If you went to the VW dealers they would sell a Bosch alternator in a VW box. The Ford dealers would also sell the Bosch alternator in a Ford box. The main dealers would charge far more than eurocarparts because they were selling 'genuine' parts.0

Seems cheap to me you can surely write in 2hrs labour £100.
Decent discs from £54 pair from Eurocarparts plus pads, rear shoes and rear Drums come in just over £200.
There are cheap discs that do not last 12 months usually £100 front only with Mintex pads.
Last ones bought for an old Golf much larger 330mm Brembo and Mintex rear with Mintex better pads £200 parts alone that if sold by Eurocarparts would be £300+ They last and even better stopping power than genuine.0 -
The brake pads on my VW are made by ATE so if I buy those I have bought 'genuine' parts but much cheaper than the dealers sell them for. You get some hilarious internet discussions. "I have fitted ATE brake pads on my car" "ATE? Never heard of them. I wouldn't fit cheap pattern parts. I go for genuine from the main dealer". The 'genuine' obsessed people are just throwing money down the drain. It sometimes takes a bit of detective work to find out who manufacturers the 'genuine' part though.0

It doesnt take 2 hours to fit front pads and discs. it took him about 45 mins and he charged me £75 labour.0 -
I think my current car makes a mockery of the whole main dealership business. It's made out of all Volkswagen parts but then they put a Ford badge on it. So it was pointless taking it to a Ford dealer because it was a VW. "We are specialists in looking after your Ford." Great but it's actually a VW. I never tried taking it to a VW for servicing but apparently they were told to refuse to touch them. If you went to Ford dealers asking for parts they were always "OOh it's a special order part". That means they have to buy it from VW and then charge twice as much. An independent would happily look after all sorts. So an independent would be better than taking your VW to a dealership that was only used to looking after Fords.
I thought you did all your own work as you don't trust garages?0
