The electric shower is the appliance which uses the most electricity in the house.
One way I ve tried , and got it down to less than 2 minutes use, is to switch shower on just enough to wet yourself properly. Switch it off at the pull switch whilst you can take your time to wash hair/body properly without the shower blasting away for 10 minutes needlessly wasting both water and electricity. Then switch it on for a few seconds to finish off..
Shower on only for 2 minutes.
. I know its a bit extreme but this is a Money Saving site after all

A 5 minute shower uses just over 2 kWh of gas, which works out at around 7p This is saving of around 5p, compared to my electric shower, that was never all that powerful. This works out around £20 a year, which is a quarter of my weekly income.

On top of the savings, it's a brilliant shower. Powerful and warm and only cost me £100 and around £60 to fit it myself. To begin with, I did not want to get out the damn thing, so savings eaten into :)

If energy companies would drop the price of electricity a few pence I could put the heating on a bit more.....

    Amen!

Also, i think it's funny, when someone proudly proclaims they've used very little gas, and that they rarely use the gas-fired central heating at all.

Only to later find out, they have a log burner, ground source heat-pump, and an electric shower, hob, cooker..... in other words nothing that actually uses gas!

Regarding spending the money saved on a nice wine. Unfortunately if the ambient temp fell below 20C, the missus hand would be shaking so much it would get spilled all over the carpet :)

Forgot to mention, heating came on automatically, as outside temp was 5C.

According to my report,we used 4 hours in August which surprised me.
  • Heating tuned back off at the boiler again!

It was only coming on for a few minutes each morning which seemed like a bit of a waste of gas so it is turned off until it gets cooler.

My house in Edinburgh has been staying at around 17 degrees or higher this summer. It's only in the last week it's dropped below that. Twice I have boosted for an hour to 18, mainly for someone else living with me just now. The temp is finally dropping though, so I assume the heating will kick in automatically if it drops below 16 which is the setting I live with until I sit down in the evening. This is the first year I'm working from home so I will have to change my settings from 14 when I was out all day.

Yep, working home does change the rules of the game. I also work from home which means it's imperative that I make sure the flat is as insulated as I can get it for a rented property and that I'm doing as much as I can to keep myself warm, before the heating goes on. Last year was my first and I learned a lot from it so this last month or so I've been investing in small things that will help me keep the heating off. Extra duvet, hot water bottles, extra draft excluder and new lounge wear and pjs all dealt with. I tried jiffy wrap on my windows last year but I don't know whether it helped. I am going to add fleece inner curtains this year to some of my windows.
