Have You Put Your Heating On?

Sitting at my computer in the room where the boiler is and heard the sound of the boiler started up.

My wife has just turned the heating on .

Why do they make it so easy to turn it on "sarcasm"?

I had mine on for 30mins in August! Live on the south coast too! Coldest summer for a long time.

Heating never Off, it works by thermostat. Was 3 degrees last night so heating kicked in.

Never touch mine. Thermostat and timer deal with it automatically. That's what they are there for.

We put ours on last night for the first time since we moved in in April.

Wasn't even that cold compared to what the old house was like but it was a tad on the chilly side compared to what is has been.

Will leave it on the thermostat now for the winter.

    So totally agree with this.

It seems to be a particularly British obsession with turning heating on and off. If it's freezing cold in July why wouldn't you want your home to be heated? Additionally a decent programmeable thermostat lets you have the heating on overnight at a lower level.

The only time it's necessary to interact with heating controls is to configure holiday mode, so that the heating is off until the day you return.
  • My thermostat is turned down to 10c, mainly cos I turned it down when I went on holiday at the same time we had the cold spell in August, I was traipsing round the Highlands with my tent. It's less faff to just drop the thermostat temp than fiddle around with the timer trying to set holiday times.

I'd forgotten to turn it back up again, but it's not felt cold in the house during the day at all. My house does seem to do a good job of being cool in a heatwave & holding warmth when it starts to get colder, though.
I have switched my little fan heater in my bedroom on for 15 minutes a couple of mornings & added a fleece blanket over the summer duvet as the nights are cooler, but it definitely doesn't feel chilly enough for the heating to come on yet. It's be clicking off again within 30 mins most likely

Exactly. Why put up with being cold in August when you wouldn't in January. The man who services my boiler loves people who do turn it off for the summer though. All those expensive emergency callouts!
  • I am aiming to get through to late October before I put mine on and hoping for a mild autumn. However I am housesitting for my parents and their house is big with large windows and it's been freezing. Not helped that I didn't realise I should have brought my winter woolies with me! So I've had the heating on a few times this past 10 days. They are back tomorrow from a hot holiday so I expect the heating will be liberally used when they return.
