From memory, mine's not been on since March.

The newspapers are predicting another "Beast from the East" cold winter. It will therefore be exceptionally mild as they never get it right, especially so soon.

All those air currents above us have apparently moved into the "send cold weather endlessly" position.

My thermostat is currently set at 19°C on a timer, and so far during an 'on period' the coldest its been is 19.2°C so not quite cold enough yet. All the rain does make it seem colder though so I may be tempted to raise the temperature, but so far so good. A few elderly family/neighbours all have their heating on already (thermostats set for 22°C - 26°C!)
  • No....and we barely used it last winter. We have our own supply of wood so installed two wood burners in the spring of 2018 (shortly after purchasing the property) and found that they were all that was required, heating wise even on the coldest days. In previous, larger houses we never had the central heating on in the bedrooms.

We have school style traditional cast iron radiators for a couple of our ground floor rooms but these are not connected yet and possibly won't be till next year.

This annually reoccurring thread usually leads to hardy posters claiming they brave near Artic temperatures before they need to put on heating; apparently 12C is tolerable and 16C positively balmy.;)

You have to wonder what these hardy soles spend the extra few pence they have saved on the gas bill by not have the heating on, on.

    Jumpers??!
  • I admit, I've put it on in the morning the past 3 days. For 10 minutes which kept it warm for a while. Even with fluffy jumpers and dressing gowns! I feel the cold easily. I use a hot water bottle and hot drinks the rest of the day.

    Better quality wine..

I only had my central heating on last year during and when I got back from my winter holiday (as frost protection); the rest of the time the log burner in the lounge was all I needed and that was all scrounged, self-seasoned and prepped wood that would otherwise have gone to waste.

Gas bill for the previous 12 months was c £60 (it's since gone up), so I had fun browsing my wine society catalogues. :D

Some people cannot afford to put their heating on. I have ripped out my electric shower and replaced with a gas thermostatic shower, to try and reduce my electricity bill. When you only get £85 a week, putting the heating on early is not a luxury some people can afford. Yes, I am entitled to WHD, but there is no guarantee that I will be accepted. One year I did not get it - OVO blamed it on an admin error. That year was difficult for me.

The electric shower is the appliance which uses the most electricity in the house.
One way I ve tried , and got it down to less than 2 minutes use, is to switch shower on just enough to wet yourself properly. Switch it off at the pull switch whilst you can take your time to wash hair/body properly without the shower blasting away for 10 minutes needlessly wasting both water and electricity. Then switch it on for a few seconds to finish off..
Shower on only for 2 minutes.
. I know its a bit extreme but this is a Money Saving site after all
