It's what annoys me about speed awareness courses - people who get caught are totally aware of the speed they are going. They know that they shouldn't do it. They know that excessive speed can cause a potential accident to be much more catastrophic and even fatal for themselves, their passengers and anyone else involved.

But they don't care. And a course won't change that.

Like the OP. To be caught doing 96 means his speedo would have been reading 100mph+. All he cares about is how much this might cost him.

Last night on traffic cops a policeman was driving at 150mph for an extended time
I simply do not accept that he can possibly be safer driving at this speed than I am at 86 MPH on an empty motorway which I understand is the limit of an awareness course.
However having seen so much tailgating by jackasses on Motorways I can understand why the authorities want to maintain the 70 limit

You're probably right. But society (or most of it anyway) seems prepared to accept that it is probably prudent to allow well trained drivers of emergency response vehicles to exceed the speed limit (provided they are not simply going down the chippie to get supper for the shift). But they are not so willing to accept that you should be allowed to exceed the speed limit by more than 20% just in order to get home five minutes quicker or simply because you like going fast.

Just Google image hadecs3 motorway camera - plenty of images of the new installations that use dual radar detection on the nearside gantry leg.
