I used up some rather boring apples and made apple butter.

I’ll have a big dollop on my porridge tomorrow

Sorry I didn't return to thank you but I've been 'locked out' for a couple of days. Have made another new password although I know that the previous one was correct, and carry on keeping not so calm!  I hope that these glitches disappear soon. It's a shame to see a lot less posts than we used to have on this forum... :(

  • I have a small one person one.  Haven't used it much at all - how long does it take to do basic things - like just cook carrots and other veg, or maybe do brown rice?  Never came with a proper booklet and I am at home so don't need it on low for many hours and can use on high.

Brown rice is best off just boiled on the hob. Or microwave.

Vegetables vary massively in terms of texture and cooking time anyway, and personally I would do vegetables on their own on the hob, say steaming or boiling.

For slow cooker meals, think first of all of what you might put in a casserole. If you browse the internet and find recipes for larger slow cookers, scale down the ingredients (you want to aim for the slow cooker to ideally be between 1/2 and 2/3 full for liquid based recipes) but the cooking times will be similar no matter what size of slow cooker.

    If it's a 1.5 litre slow cooker, here's a manual:
    https://www.breville.co.uk/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-breville-uk-Library/default/dw32bf1e67/documents/instruction-manuals/VTP169_Rev4.pdf

Soups work well, and you can reduce the amount of liquid so you are only cooking the base in the slow cooker (think like a can of condensed soup) so for  example you could make 6 portions in the slow cooker, so you could freeze 5 of the "base" portions. Then for each, add hot water and heat in microwave for each portion to serve

If you want to get creative, you can also  cook breads and cakes and even biscuits in the slow cooker.

Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
