  • On my current pc about 200gb is used of the 320gb capacity.
Have you tried clearing the temporary files, etc. 200GB is a huge amount of data.

On Windows 10, go to Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, "Free up disk space"

What's your current PC? It's possible that fitting an SSD (and maybe more RAM) will bring it back to life for relatively little cost. The existing HDD could be used for backup storage.

    Avoid All-In-One devices.

Its 12 years old and starting to play up a bit. Something odd keeps happening to the visuals and its really slow now. Well not surprising as it has windows vista and only 1gb ram. It did work perfectly well for a good number of years though. All i need to something that wont give the type of issues this one is prone to. Surf, the net, watch videos, youtube, transfer video, music and photos between it and a device. Thats all i need really. I will eventually get a printer to connect to it.the current pc is a compaq presario sr5129uk.

I clear junk every time i log off on the system, using ccleaner and then kaspersky. So three times every time.

You don't need 1TB drives, that is marketing BS.

That entirely depends on what you use the PC for. If you are doing lots of video editing, more than 1tb will be probably be needed. I would go for a small SSD where I install my OS and a couple of programs, which everything else being stored on a larger hdd.

Say your outlay was 1000 quid that's 2 quid a week if it lasts 10 years.

PCs these days are much longer lasting ( my opinion ) than they were.

I'd deffo go for an SSD. Deffo.

Memory 8 Gb preferably but expandable to 16 for future

I like Dell when I'm in UK but here I've got an ACER mini desktop which is very good.

My missus wanted a 23" screen but I only ever use it in a customised smaller screen mode.

I find wireless mouse and wireless keyboard the way to go.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

The reason people are suggesting an SSD is that they are much faster than spinning hard drives, they do not have to seek across a spinning disk to find data, they can simply just access it.

If space is an issue for you then look at new quad layer drives. These drives are able to be produced more cheaply at larger capacities. They do have a disadvantage of being slower when you copy huge files and the cache runs out, but unless you are going to be moving 70GB files around all the time then you probably will never notice.

Some vendors offer systems that have an SSD for booting and then have a HDD for storing data..

This is really hopeless. With all of the advice available to you here, you have done absolutely nothing in twelve years.

Running Vista on 1 GB of RAM in 2019? Ridiculous.

Really little point in advising you of anything, since you most obviously will ignore it.

Someone tells you that SSD is the way and you argue that HDD have a higher capacity :money:

No one can guarantee that anything will last twelve years. It might or it might not.

So honestly, this thread is on a hiding to nothing. Just buy whatever you want.

In case perchance someone in there is listening, the best option would be to have, at least, an SSD that contains Windows and is used for day to day and to keep the HDD for storage.

What someone could do is to simply add the SSD to the device and clean install Windows to it, leaving the 1TB HDD in place. But it is clear that you will not attempt any kind of maintenance at all.

You can find new PCs with that arrangement.

One of the reasons that refurbs are mentioned, it that they often will have the option of having everything fitted for you in advance.

The PCs to which you link are fine, apart from the lack of solid state drives. The best solid state drives are NVMe drives. So this will be the technology moving forward. HDD are only fitted because they are cheap.
    But they are relatively slow.
So you would be buying a new PC with an inherent handicap.
One can only imagine the horrible experience of day to day usage of your current PC. £25 to £30 spent on RAM and an SSD would have totally transformed the performance.....years ago

Not really but most of those that fit what people say are £700+. That's too much for me. Secondly I have stuck with the current one for so long again for financial reasons and most of that time ran fine for me. And ssd may not turn out the best if in a few years I find I have no storage room left.
