Confused what this is on detached house and implications! Please help!

Hi !

I am looking at a detached house, but it has this bridge between the garage and next house. Very confused what this is considering it’s supposed to be detached. Would this be a big concern for you? I wonder who has erected this and if mortgage provided would be concerned. Can I ask the owner to remove this? I’ve uploaded a pic in the link below.

Looks like it's just a roof to provide a bit of shelter. Can't imagine why a lender would be bothered or why a seller would entertain a request from you to remove it.

I think you would do well to look at the tiles on the garage roof.

Perhaps ask the seller / estate agent what is it? Who put it there and if you purchased the property could it be removed.
Problem is the neighbour might of erected it and might not want it removed.. que neighbour issues.
Looks like neighbour hangs lights from it, not a good sign.

However, that’s a lot of mights and assumptions. Best hear from seller.
If it were to remain fixed in place, it certainly would but me off !

Hi can you confirm why to look at the tiles of the garage roof? Is there something you’ve noticed? Thanks for the help!

Thanks ! I’ve emailed the agent hopefully they give me an honest answer. I’m surprised they would have allowed the neighbour to put it up without consulting first. Would it put you off because of the potential disputes with the neighbour or because the mortgage provider may not like it?

Is the greenery moss on the garage roof or a tree overhanging?

That looks very Heath Robinson. I'd not be keen on that being attached to my property either.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)
  • Hi,

it was maybe agreed between both neighbours previously.

Ask your vendor for details of when he/she/they gave permission for the neighbour to attach the structure to the house you are considering buying (assuming it is attached).

It looks as though it is a makeshift lean-to for the neighbour's benefit.
  • Thanks everyone! I’m now also concerned about the roof comments. I’ve attached a better view of roof here https://ibb.co/tYTxp0V - sorry I’m not that good at spotting issues with houses so appreciate advice!

I'd guess it was informally agreed between the two neighbours, and maybe they split the cost.

It might become a 'headache' in future.

For example, one neighbour might say it needs repairs costing hundreds of pounds, the other neighbour doesn't want to contribute.

It starts to look like a tatty eyesore, one neighbour wants it removed, but the other neighbour doesn't.
