My AS daughter has always had issues with underwear (she's 12). And her's is more to do with the feel of the fabric and the feel of the elastic around the top. Very often she has worn them on her hips and even now elasticated trousers or skirts are pulled down onto her hips (yet she won't wear the sort that are supposed to rest on your hips because they are shorter in the waist.
I have now become an expert in being able to take the knickers out from the packets and feel the fabric, test the stretchness of the elastic and how wide it is (she only likes the very thin kind of hem edged elastic), also as she's quite slim the leg holes have to be cut a certain way.
Obviously once I've hit on a pair that she likes I buy loads in all the ages up to carry me on - except now I've hit the problem that once you go into 11-12yrs the range is different and styles vary.
All I can suggest is once you find a pair - buy loads in all the sizes.0 -

Thank you very much. It's really great to know that we're not the only one with the problem. On the off chance, which brand is your daughter happiest with? I think I will probably show the grandaughter this post because I think she feels better knowing that there are other people out there who have the same issues she does. Thanks again.0 -
Just to mention that there is a british support group on yahoo that has been very helpful with all these issues. worth looking atolympic challenge week 6 = $414.70:j

we are trying to get my 3 yr old son diagnosed with aspergers at the mo... why don't they listen!
he always wants a jumper on even mid summer, and buying him new clothes is the biggest nightmare ever. he won't wear anything new so it is a physical battle to try and get new stuff on him!! i'm dreading as he gets older, anyway i just wanted to ask all those with autistic children, did it get worse as they got older or have you known since they were little. we have been told that it is very rare for a 3 year old to be diagnosed, so am terrified that its just gonna get worse.
sorry to kidnap your post!0 -
Hi does he have communication difficulties. Is he happier on his own, does to much sensory input distress him (noise, touch, crowds) Does he display any self stimulation behavior. e.g. flapping hands, paper, string in front of him. Is he ritulistic in any way e.g. things have to be done in a set order, days have to follow a set pattern or he becomes distressed.
All of the above COULD be strong indicators of ASD.
I am by no means an expert but do work with severe ASD young people.
Communication is one of the biggest difficulties.
There are excellent support groups with so many views on how to help an ASD person cope.
Donna Williams books Nobody Nowhere
somebody somewhere
colour to the blind
are helpful reading she is autistic herself and it gives an insight into her world.
Freeks Geeks and Aspergers by Luke ??? his book also gives an insight.
Ros Blackburn is a guest speaker and also autistic her speechs are excellent.
One quote was her mum asking her to hang the washing on the line, which she did. Only trouble was she didnt wash it. Her mum didnt say wash it then hang it out.

Hi Moo
As mother of daughter who was never diagnosed, but probably has AS, and grandmother of diagnosed AS, there are two answers. Daughter was total nightmare as teenager and school a disaster area BUT we got through it all. I always knew something was different but, back then, AS wasn't something you knew about. With hindsight maybe we could have done things differently (such as consideration of home education) and her life would have been easier.
Grandaughter worse in a lot of ways but I am hoping, with a diagnosis, her life, at school especially, will be easier. Can't really say if it gets worse, it's just seems to go through different stages. For instance, grandaughter terrified of noises, but can now tolerate them enough to be able to do things such as watch fireworks (albeit with hands over ears!).
I got good book out of library last week but lent to daughter and can't remember name of it, except it was by someone called Kevin who wrote it at around 10 or 12 years old. Gave an excellent insight into AS.

Just looked at link to Amazon in JS's post and the book I read was Asperger Syndrome, the Universe and Everything; ~ Kenneth Hall (on same link!)
