It also seems like they're adding VAT, but I'm sure I'd read that their prices included VAT at the time of signing up. It may be that I've misunderstood the offer or the bill, but can someone please clarify?
£23.99 is way off the £15.66 I was expected to be charged.Effective monthly cost takes into account the deal that's on offer so we subtract the value of these 'rewards' from the total price you'd pay over the contract (including any upfront delivery or activation costs), then divide that by the number of months to show you how much in effect you're paying each month.
In order to factor in the reward, it must either be cashback or a voucher that can be spent on a wide range of goods. In this case, it's bill credit to you within 3 months.
Shell's bills don't quiet explain but the standard price for your broadband is actually £26.66/mth but there's a bill credit of £6.67 to bring this down to the advertised price of £23.99. Shell will then apply a bill credit to your account within 3 months. From previous posts, you'll see this bill credit applied pre-VAT so it may appear less than £100 but VAT is then added as a seperate entry on your bill so it is in fact £100.
I hope this helps explain,
MSE Chris
I'm in the same boat. I Signed up for a similar deal back in July 01 2020 newsletter:
Shell Energy 64Mb fibre (very fast) & line rental
Equivalent cost '£19.58/mth'
Apply via THIS shell link and you pay £29.99/mth. As you get an AUTOMATIC £125 bill credit within 3mths, it's a total £234.88 outlay over the 1yr contract, equiv to £19.58/mth.
So as far as I understood it I'd pay ((12*29.99) - 125) which works out to your £19.58 / month.
So far all good.
However just received my first bill:
Looks very similar to one above
New charges
Month 20/7/20-31/8/2020
Superfast Fibre Plus Broadband (in advance) 20/07/2020 - 31/08/2020 £42.99
Promotional Discount 7 20/07/2020 - 31/08/2020 £8.13 CR
total - 34.86
Total charges £34.86
VAT at 20% £6.97
Total charges this period £41.83
So instead of paying nearly £20 per month I seem to be charged nearly double that. Obviously a bit of a shock.
Wondering how I can actually get the deal I was expecting

Suggest you contact MSE rather than wait for Chris to appear.

It looks like you're being billed for a period of 42 days (20/7/20-31/8/2020), this is normal on your first bill and is explained in the link I provided earlier: https://help.shellenergy.co.uk/hc/en-us/articles/360001044418-Why-is-my-first-bill-higher-than-I-expected-#:~:text=Don't%20worry%20if%20your,payment%20of%20your%20second%20month.
It might be helpful to mention that the £8.13 credit you see on your bill isn't actually anything to do with the £125 bill credit you get after 3mths. This actually relates to the price difference between Shell Energy broadband's 'direct pricing' for it's faster broadband (£34.99) and the pricing it provides affiliates like MSE (£29.99).
The £125 bill credit is usually credited to your third bill (pre VAT) and with VAT calculated at the end of your bill.
It's best to contact Shell Energy with any questions relating to your bills as when we've contacted them previously, they give a thorough breakdown of how it's been calculated.
Hope that's useful,

Thanks to @MSEChris for giving the explanations.
Further to that I would add that it is advised to keep a record of ALL payments made though the contract. At the end of the contract the final payment should be less than a monthly one.
As an example Basic Broadband:
My contract started on 06 December 2019 net cost @ £10.74 per month = £128.88 for the year to 05 December 2020.
Payments taken to date total £62.53; so for just over 8 months I have paid less than would be owed on a pro rata basis.
I expect to pay total £66.35 over the next 4 months (August to November).
Thank you Shell; I am content to RENEW at the same cost (my comparison search for a better deal starts in October, your continuing cost is too high) although it would be simpler to have the direct debit at £10.74 per month and save all the confusion and enquiries.

When you apply for the shell broadband product, there is no option to select activation/switch over date, just that the service will start in 14 days. Has anyone exeperiance of getting this delayed so a specific start date can be chosen - if so how?
I presume there is no option to do this or webchat in shell energy online account management (These offers are good for those PAYG out of contract but not those timing to switch at the end).

Just applying for this as my current provider NowTV cannot compete 'Cheapest fast b'band & line. Apply via this Shell link by 24 Aug and it's £24.99/mth, plus you get an AUTO £120 bill credit within 3mths. So it's a total £179.88 outlay over the 1yr contract, equiv £14.99/mth'
I get to the checkout and Shell say I cannot keep my landline number and will be issued with a new one?
Anyone any ideas why they cannot take it over , its been with a fair few providers over the years!

Can any recent sign ups to the 35Mb or 75Mb fibre packages tell me what the routers are like? Do they have a 5Ghz channel?
Also it looks like they want to charge me £60 for an engineer visit to install a new line. I already have a BT line but its just not been used since I had Virgin Media for 10 years. Can't they just activate this line remotely?
