Thank you everyone, that's very helpful!
To fill in some more details - Moved here from London (where we were for the past 10 years). We don't drive (at the moment) and both of us work in Macc town, so need to be within a 10-15 minute walk of work, shops, etc. on the western side of the rail tracks. This does kind of limit the area we can look in.
At least for now, we definitely prefer mid-terraced houses with limited outdoor space. Have almost always lived in flats so don't really mind living in a terraced house with neighbours chipping in for heating
plus we don't need private parking.
A jump to a semi or detached would be too much at present, maybe something for a few years down the line if we are still around. And in any case, there's very few of them in the town area.
We have viewed a couple of 2/3 bed houses (they're called "weaver cottages") but none of them had a downstairs toilets or a layout that would allow us to install one without it looking like a porta-toilet in the living room. Unfortunately my partner has a bad knee so we need a downstairs wc.
I had a more thorough look at sold prices in the area and it is definitely WAY too overpriced. Maybe closer to 220k or so? Will keep looking......0 -
What's the budget?
I would extend the viewing area with an analysis of the bus routes.
more like this 2bed+ 1/2 mile upto 300 of the one you posted has for sale 69/69 SSTC have a good look at the pricing and watch for the real sold prices to get your market data.
there are 3bed semis with decent space at £250k under stairs cupboards next to the kitchen and it looks like the soil pipe comes down close on the outside.

Wow thanks, that is really helpful and puts the asking price even more into perspective!
We can "afford" (as in banks will lend) more but don't want to spend any more than 250k, and that too only for houses that are pretty much ready to move in.getmore4less wrote: »What's the budget?

How much space do you need?
If the longer term plan is to get something nice then I would look carefully at what you buy now.
4 bed is more a family/share type place so market for one with no parking could be limited.
Moving houses is relatively quite expensive.
if you can find something that has good resale potential and is cheaper than renting you can offset some of that for every year you stay there
if that move will be quite soon<3y) it may be better to stay renting until you can make the real move.
If funds allow maybe it could become a rental when you move on, something to consider as an option very carefully.
Would you be interested in a project where you could add value, will need careful selection if not to become a risk of getting little back for time/money put in.0 -
Lovely house, but although its 4 bed, tiny garden and no reception room. I think they have spent a fair amount on it, but there is a limit to what you can get back. I think its very pricey, maybe 20k over. Why not see it, view and offer.0

Next door sold for £161k in 2015, & has changed hands 6 times since 1997, so could be a lot of churn in the area.
The other next door was listed in March 2018, no sold data.

I saw that and tried to find the old ad on RM and Zoopla, but couldn't. Sometimes when you look up the street on RM or Zoopla, you can see links to the old ads.
The ad talks about a 2-storey extension so maybe they bought the house and then did the extension which would explain why they've priced it so high trying to recoup costs. The actual property sold for £130k Oct 20180 -
To me it seems wildly overpriced but I don’t know the area.
I would be really concerned about what happens when you come to sell. It might fit your requirements but the parking and lack of hall is going to put a lot of people off. For example my sister has a villa terrace (though really it’s semi as it’s on the end). It had been on the market for ages when she bought and in the end she paid 20% less than the previous owners paid for it 4 years prior to that.
And her house is in many ways better than this one as it has a large hall and a lot more downstairs space. Happily she was able to buy a garage directly over the road so selling in future won’t be an issue.0 -
4 doubles with no parking, They will be lucky to get £210 for it.
Zoopla is estimating many of the semi's at 300K based on the 2010 sale price of 200K total rubbish.0
