the Wii is the best thing since sliced bread for about the first week then it becomes a dust gathering doorstop.

    Seriously.

Wii Sports is good but you will get bored of it very quickly. A 'proper' console will stay fun much longer and has much better games

Just like to say that this is like the truest post I've ever read :)

The wii really does lose its appeal incredibly quickly...

Back to the OP, it has to be the 360...every...day...of..the...week...

Where to begin, it's so tough...OK...So

    1) Xbox hardware is better (I know it's often said the other way round, but it just isn't the case) - this means that games, ultimately, are gonna be able to look better and do more stuff. Also, most developers out there say that the 360 is their console of choice, because it's so much easier to write for.

    2) Choice of games. Really awesome selection at the moment...I used to be a big PC gaming fan, but haven't touched it since i got my 360...Big recommendations for Call Of Duty 4, Bioshock DIRT and of course Halo 3...

    3) Better exclusives...As is mentioned hereabouts, the PS2 always used to get all the big exclusives...(for the record, I was a massive PS2 fanboy...so I'm not anti-sony in the slightest...) thus far in the next gen, it's been 360 all the way...a couple of the best games around at the mo (think H3, GOW) are 360 exclusives...and they're set for more...including exlusive content for GTA4 etc...and a lot of the old-school Sony exclusives are gonna appear on the 360 now...(let's not forget that Assassins Creed was originally a PS3 exclusive) don't even be surprised to see the next Metal Gear Solid on the 360.

    4) XBOX Live...Yes, I know this "home" thing's talked about a lot...but what would you prefer, some lame kinda second life rip off that may or may not turn up at some point, or a proven gaming network...

    5) Rumble. When I think of playing some of these games without rumble...man, that would lessen the experience.

    6) More 360s sold. Now, I know that sounds a stupid statement, given that the 360's been out longer - of course it's going to have sold more...but what it means (sounding even dumber) is that more people have them...when I got mine, I discovered that about 10 people at work all have a 360 - and I play with them a lot. In contrast, I think there's 1 person at work with a PS3...

I'll stop before this turns into a complete rant....

Finally, just to reitterate, I really was a huge PS2 fan and couldn't wait for the PS3 to come out...but somewhere along the line, something happened and the 360 became better...and now, really, I honestly can't think of one good reason why anyone would want the PS3 over the 360...Not one...

Xbox 360 also has backward compatibility for older xbox games. The new PS3 has no backward compatibility whatsoever, meaning you wont be able to play any existing playstation games. So for me xbox 360 all the way.
    Cheers

  • If you want a console that has more games right now then get the 360 but be warned it has been forecasted that 2008 onwards is the time of the Playstation 3.

The Playstation is going to absolutlely whoop the !!! off the 360 hereafter - with the updates, HOME, DivX support, free online gaming , forthcoming games, TV recording, rumble, TV on Demand, PSP synching, etc etc.

Your son like most of my friends will enjoy the 360 but will soon be wanting a PS3 -

If you plan on forking out the dosh and want to avoid laying out another wad of cash next xmas, then pick the Playstation 3 console.

Many solid exclusive titles are coming out for the PS3 too - like Metal Gear Solid IV etc.

And dont listen to this malarky abou the 360 hardware is better - it is only better for the developers - because its easy to write games for, which makes the X360 a system for NOW. The PS3 was built for now and the future. Developers will inevitably need to train their skills to write games for the Cell, which is when people will see the true power of the PS3.

Plus recent figures have shown Blu-Ray dominating the so called "format war"

The Nintendo Wii is the fastest selling console and many sites, analysts have predicted thaat the first console to take over the Wii is the Sony console and remember the 360 has had a one year headstart so their will inevitably be more games for it.

I am 31 and love my Wii! Not sure about your kiddie game statement, Resident Evil is rather good and so satisfying blowing zombies heads off with the wiimote! Such a better feeling than waggling a joypad around.
Mario Galaxy (on my christmas list!) is supposed to be game of the year, along with the Zelda and Metroid franchise I don't see how it would gather dust...
Sometimes you get what you deserve... :cool2:

  • with regard to the original question which to buy, the 16 yr old will enjoy either of the consoles. which is bigger better faster doesnt matter.I have 360, ps3 and a wii all are very good and have redeeming features and drawbacks. All about personal choice. I prefer ps3 interfacing, 360 better games selection, wii good family fun.

...but which developer's going to want to do this, rather than continue to code on the friendlier platform? Clearly nobody - hence Sony losing exclusives on a couple of their big names (last thing I read, MGS4 itself was a possibility to pop up on the 360 according to "the street"...)

And from what I've read, it's the gfx that's the bottleneck for the PS3, so you can get all the power you want out of the cell, it won't make too much difference...

I'll be interested to see if your analysts' predictions are correct...I'm doubtful...so many people have 360s already, I can't see too many dropping it and buying a 360 instead...

btw another thing to think about for the OP - if you buy a HD-DVD drive for the 360, you get 5 free titles for it, which goes a long way to making it a little more reasonable...5 titles would probably set you back £70...so really you only spend £30 on the HD-DVD drive...that, of course, is assuming that you actually want any of the titles on offer :)
  • Read this thread with interest. My almost 15year old wants a 360, I wont buy him 1 due to having seen and heard the language used between players playing online(BIL has one) and don't really see the point of it without online play.
After having spoke to few people about which is better I'm hearing its the PS3, the 360 is apparently prone to quite a few glitches & blu ray is going to be the way to go in the future, so I will be getting the PS3 soon.

As for the wii my friend bought 1 in Oct and as a few people have said already it is now gathering dust.

so, which did the OP end up buying, if any?

What about a weekend away at a outdoor fitness camp, fresh air will do any teenager the world of good, rather than be stuck indoors on a console.

PS3 for me, purely because it has more powerful hardware and if games were to be developed tht pushed both consoles to their limit. the PS3 games would look much better.

Not to mention the fact that I literally don't know one person who is still on their first 360, they've all had them break down and need replaced (a couple are on their third xbox) because of the poor design with regards cooling. The latest 360's it is claimed have combatted the problem but they've not been around long enough to tell if they're not going to stop working after a year.

mine is having an outdoor/adventure day for xmas, not sure what he'll think about it though:rotfl: Even before games consoles, teenagers and exercise never went well together.
