Hello

Please can someone help me with a situation I find myself in.

On Saturday last week, I took my 11 yo son to the local school uniform to kit him out for next term.
I had purchased his Blazer from another shop however it needed some alterations. I asked the shop to make the adjustments and we agreed this would be completed at a very reasonable £3.

Additionally, we needed some School Trousers, which again needed altering, and we agreed to purchase 5 pairs and have them altered, the receipt gives a cost of £17.50

I offered to pay there and then but was advised it wasn't needed until collection.

Today my wife got the call for us to collect the items.
once I arrived at the shop (Which was full) the owner asked if I'd paid , I said no so she proceeded to "till up", to my astonishment, £17.50 , plus alterations giving a total of £101.50. I explained that the receipt says £17.50, it doesn't indicate anywhere the word "each" or "Total" or any words to indicate this would be an individual cost for each pair.

I told the women that I wasn't prepared to pay this, I showed her the receipt to which she stated that I have no option but to pay as she is unable to resale due to the alterations.

Now, she has the previously paid for Blazer (as in purchased from another shop) and is refusing to "give this back " even though I am prepared to pay for this.

As she had a shop full of people, and I have no wish to make a scene I advised I would discuss with my wife and call back in tomorrow before work.

What I'd like to know please, is where do I stand?

Many Thanks
Stephen

  • You really thought that was the price for 5 pairs?

Not much you can do bar pay up if you want your uniform.

Was it realistic to expect 5 pairs of trousers with alterations for £17.50?

    I would say not.
  • Did you really expect 5 pairs of trousers, including alterations, for £17.50 in total? £3.50 a pair???

In my experience £17.50 each is a pretty average price for school trousers, even without alterations.

No, I didn't expect to pay £17.50 for 5 pairs, but neither did I expect or was shown that the cost would be over £100.
I actually thought she should have wrote a 3 instead of the one.

Why wouldn't it be for 5 pairs when the blazer alteration was £3???

OP, how much were the trousers per pair? E.g. how much is the cost of repair in comparison to the cost of the trousers.

They have no right to keep your blazer. You own this and have paid for the alteration.

EDIT: I had assumed that the £17.50 was just the alteration cost, and that the OP had paid for the trousers separately.

OP, can you confirm, were you assuming that the £17.50 was the total cost of 5 pairs of trousers AND alteration, or just the alteration cost?

5 pairs of trousers including alteration for just £17.50 would obviously be ridiculous!!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Is it realistic to pay £17.50 to alter a pair of school trousers?

    I would say not.

as I've stated, no I don't believe £17.50 for 5 pairs is realistic, and I am absolutely willing to move on this, but not to the extent being charged.
I suppose am in my rights to refuse to pay for them and not purchase them at all?
to clarify, I haven't paid for the Blazer yet, but I would pay for that.

    Suggest you read OP again.

Hint - the alteration was not £17.50 per pair.
  • So what exactly did you think the £17.50 referred to?

it doesn't say anything about alteration £17.50, it literally says
    Trousers 5 £17.50
