Police Speed Guns

Okay so, I was drive my girlfriend to work and I came down a steep hill that is a 50 zone, and at the bottom is a bend to the right then a 30 zone. I started to slow just before the bend as usual, and as I got round there was a sneaky copper parked on the carpark of the spar shop and stood on the kerb with a radar. As I saw her j checked my Speedo n it was reading just over 30. Judging by my satnav I know my cars over reads as when I’m bang on 30 I usually get 27/28 on my satnav. I think where the spedo was I would of been doing 30, but being a new driver and not wanting any points for obvious reasons, I’m panicking that I may of been doing 31 or 32 at an absolute push. Would I get fined for doing 31/32 in a 30, the officer didn’t seem to react in any way and I think she started to aim at the car behind me as I was passing her. Would I even receive a nip for this or would I have been signaled to pull over? She was enough of a distance from the bend to have gotten a reading and react if she wanted to wave me over. I think I’ll hopefully Be okay, but I panic a lot and just wanted peoples opinion... this happened in Warrington Cheshire if it makes any difference, I’m not sure if tolerances are still a thing with speed

Highly unlikely, to the point of saying, no you wouldn't.
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

"sneaky copper"....how dare they hang around waiting for people to break the law!

Not that sneaky if you saw her.

You'll be fine. It'll be the people taking the mick that get deservedly caught.

Whilst in theory you can be prosecuted for 1mph over the limit, the guidelines for enforcement suggest that action should not be taken unless the recorded speed is (Limit + 10% +2mph) ot greater - so 35mph in a 30mph limit.
  • I do fully support them using the guns and cameras, it’s just it felt a bit on the side of trying to catch out genuine mistakes, the hills EXTREMELY long and steep, and she was round the corner at the very bottom... I understand no one should speed but if someone didn’t quite hit the breaks in time it’d be very easy to get a few MPH over, and I have personally seen a nip for 32mph which my friend got, ironically from the fixed camera on the same road

And that's PRECISELY why they're there, to stop people tonking into the 30 limit at 50. The bend means there's a restriction on visibility. What if it wasn't the police there, but a nun with a basket of kittens? Or a broken-down school minibus?

Sounds to me like the right place to be enforcing the 30 limit.
  • Unless the law has changed in the last 2 years or so then TooManyPoints has it right and I wouldn’t worry if I was you.

That is of course if you was only just over as you say, as in 31mph and not like “I’ll just be a second” that people in your way often say to you and 30mins later they’re still there ;)

The laws been the same since it was written exceed the limit and face prosecution.

If it was just a police officer with a radar gun they stop you straight away? Camera vans and speed cameras record but I didn't think radar guns did anything more than store the speed recorded while they pull you over?
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

They usually pull you over, but they don’t have to.

Can I just say, well done on slowing down as I was in a discussion on pistonheads earlier and I have given up and come off there. Full of men who think speeding is actually the right thing to do and because I don’t, I’m the bad person who needs to grow up as “everyone speeds”.

Even if you point out that doing 40 in a 30 is dangerous if you hit a child, their reply is “I won’t hit them as I’m a good driver and doing 40 is actually safer” (absolute rubbish)

But to answer your question, you probably won’t get a fine until 35 mph :)
