If things are as bad as you say, I’m surprised the neighbours haven’t complained to the police and/or council.

    Perhaps they have.
The council would see the landlord's name on the LR, so I presume they'd try and contact him. How that works if he's away from home, I don't know.
From my experience though, I don't think the council or police would really care much about the neighbour's complaints.

I've got no official link to the property, so they wouldn't contact me.

    Cat... Bag.

Relative; a new term for "friend"? Reminds me of those self-penned "problems" in Jackie magazine and the like when I was a teenager... Funny how it was never the writer who had crabs/whatever.

    It's not my house.
BTL is not my cup of tea. I have enough diversification of investments without needing such hassle.
Still plenty of unprepared idiots jumping into it though - just a quick look at these forums will show you that.

  • Yes, well done Sherlock.
That website wasn't working before - so I posted here instead.

Anyway, I'm not getting involved any more, as I've done my bit now.

Fancy a harassment and stalking charge?

Not going to happen, no law against walking down a street and noticing if lights are on or off.

... you have no idea just what a HUGE pile of trouble your mate's in already.....

I think him hoping it'll blow over and offering cheaper rent will never solve the problem until he gets back, it's just letting them take 10 miles when they've already had 1 mile and he only gave an inch.

I've seen a programme on the telly before looking at overcrowding - a family were sitting in darkness, not speaking English - and they said they had no electricity because they thought that was something that was provided when they paid rent. Other countries do things differently to the way we do things here and, I guess, where they came from you paid your rent and "everything was included".

Burning doors is NOT .... normal. And is the fireplace even open/safe? They could die, or burn the house down...

All bets are off really as to what could happen in the next 3-4 months.

Maybe they are gypsies? I knew gypsies years ago that kept a horse in their living room, they got evicted...eventually.

I'm pretty certain they are Roma, but so long as they have Czech / EU passports so that's what counts.

I'm also pretty certain the original two tenants were Czech, as I'd dealt with them briefly through my work. If my cousin gets in contact with them, I think they'll come back and help sort out the problem. They seemed the type who would, as they will want to keep on good business terms.
