Becoming sick whilst on holiday

Hello everyone this is my first post.

I went on holiday to fuerteventura at the end of March 2019 for a week. Whilst we were there my son became poorly after 2 days of being there and was being sick, my husband was then poorly 2 days after him and then I was poorly after him. We booked our holiday via Thomas cook and they had even us a telephone number to contact to get help if we become unwell on hold is which I did but never got a reply to my messages. I even advised the holiday rep in the hotel. When I got back I filed a complaint which I have chased up a couple of times now to be told that due to the nature of the complaint the specialist team don’t have a timeframe and will get back to me in due course. It has now been nearly 5 months and I’m still waiting for a response. It quite frankly spoilt our holiday and at the time owls 7 months pregnant. Has anyone had the same issue and if so what did you do to get the specialist team to look at your case.

Thank you for reading.

You became poorly how, exactly? Are you blaming the hotel? Do you have proof the hotel was to blame?

What is the issue you are asking about, the illness or the lack of response?

I've been ill on holiday a few times - changes in diet, water, heat, whatever. It happens and it isn't neccessarily anyone's fault. I also get ill at home, as do most of us but we don't start looking for people to blame. Passing bug picked up from just being around people. You and your husband probably picked up whatever it was from your son.

You're going to have to be a lot more specific about what you want help with, to get any meaningful advice.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • If you were ill what did you expect the holiday rep to do?

I presume you had travel insurance although at 7 months pregnant you were sailing close to the wind on flying.

So did you contact a doctor?
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

when your family were treated by medical professionals (I assume you either went to hospital or saw a doctor) what did their tests attribute the sickness to?

No-one wants to be ill on holiday but it doesn't mean it must be somebody's fault! Your son could well have picked up a bug before you left the UK. Hopefully he didn't spread it to too many other people on the plane.

Could be noro-virus, which is spread much like colds and flu. Could be a whole bunch of things, and without a medical report or some other direct evidence of wrongdoing, the tour operator won't accept any liability. The communications side of things seems poor though. You could look at complaining to ABTA but you will have to pay a fee if TC decide to contest the matter.

The tour operator isn't at fault that you got sick. Not sure why you complained to them?
You could have gone to see a doctor and claimed on travel insurance

What was the basis for your complaint?
What are you wanting to happen?

If I was ill on holiday, I don't think I'd ring Thomas Cook (or whichever travel agent I'd booked with).
What were you expecting Thomas Cook to do?

Did you seek any medical help for the illnesses suffered by your son, your husband and yourself?
If so, did your travel insurer recompense you for those medical costs you incurred?

The tour operator might be liable, Heatherw_01 may be completely wrong. You can claim against an operator if you can show the cause of the illness was the fault of one of the tour operators suppliers, in this case, the hotel, so long as you were on a package holiday and not one that you put together yourself.

Have you looked on TripAdvisor to see if there are any other cases reported? were you on an all-inclusive package where all your meals were provided or did you eat outside the hotel? have you got any medical evidence of what you were all suffering from, did you see a doctor or pharmacist in the resort? These are the questions that you need to consider if you want to take the matter further, Thomas Cooks will take as long as you let them to answer so either ask them for a full response, it shouldn't take them this long to identify there was, or was not a problem at that time at that resort and if necessary contact a decent firm of solicitors to get things moving

Your husband got ill 2 days after your son. So, the incubation period was at least 2 days.

Your son got ill 2 days after arriving. So he was probably carrying the infection when he arrived. He may have caught the bug from the plane or the airport.
