There are plenty of companies that will allow you to do this. It generally is subject to your wife having a good history eg no claims or convictions although sometimes they will accept some. In addition it is normally subject to your wife having a full uk licence for a few years.
You will normally be required to issue a letter agreeing to the transfer and stating you understand it cannot be transferred back to you at a later date (In a lot of cases eg your wife goes to a different insurer afterwards you can transfer it back).
Try speaking to a local broker (Not Swintons)0 -
Either try speaking to a local broker (Not Swintons), or failing that ring round Insurers and ask them if they can do it at the start of the call (Make sure you make a note of their name and the date / time of the call)0

Hi
Im after some advise please. Im sure its prob a obvious answer but want to be 100% cant risk anything with car insuarance!
I am the policy holder on a More Than Policy and i have my b/f as the named driver. We had a crash back in March with a foriegn lorry driver and are in the process of sorting our calim. ( it was non fault but they dont care until things recovered from other party) . We were paid out straight away and have purchased a new car. At the time my insuarnce rpremium went up a tiny £15 for the year. It is now August and our renewal is due having received a £2000 quote from More than i have decided to go else where. What im unsure of is if my boyfriend was driving and had the crash i was a passenger at the time. But the insurenace policy is in my name. Does he or i list as having the claim? . Does it matter either way as its the same policy?

Hi All.. I insured my wife's car in my name on April (27th) With KwikFit. (paid £602.85)
I had arranged the insurance over the phone with a representative. Gave them all relevant details, Got Comprehensive with my wife as a named driver, breakdown cover and legal. They would not accept my NCD from company car so used my wife's 3 years NCD. We had a problem with getting the proof of NCD from previous insurer and had to pay another £531.87 which I paid on my debit card. Got the NCD sorted and they were happy, told me they would send the repayment of £531.87 back to me in about a week. Have now received a letter telling me the insurance has been cancelled and I will receive only £398 back. had a discussion with them and they have now agreed to pay me £641.54. Only had the insurance 3 months and lost £493.47. and they want to charge me £791 to put the insurance in my wife's name0 -
I was wondering if anyone else had come across this... i haven't read all the posts to be perfectly honest as there are LOTS!!
My car insurance is up for renewal in September at which time i will have 10 years no claims, and yet, my insurance quotes are more that last year and only £70 or so less than when i first took out car insurance 10 years ago!!
How can that be? I have had no claims, convictions, points, bans or anything since i passed my test 10 years ago. Surely the quotes should go down for each additional years no claims, not up!??!?!0 -

I don't know if this is helpful but i was passenger in an accident 5 years ago and my partner was driving (it wasn't our fault either, we skidded on wet mud dragged out of a field by a tractor!!). The (small combi) van was in my name with him a named driver. I also had a separate car insurance policy with a different company for car. Even though the van insurance policy was in my name i got the car insurance company to write a letter to me confirming that it wouldn't affect the no-claims on my car policy as it was a separate policy with a separate company. I don't know if this is because the vehicle we had the accident in was a van so it didn't affect my car policy. They also told me that on any future policies i get a quote for to put that i have no claims. But please check this with your insurer. As you say, you can't take risks with car insurance!!
The only other draw back is that (if like me) you were injured in the accident, where as normally you would be able to make a claim against the driver i.e. your b/f, as it was your policy you would be claiming against yourself so you wouldn't be able to! Would have come in handy for me if i could have! 5 years of ongoing pain and lots of time off work may have been eased my a little monetary compensation!
Hope that helped (and made sense!)

Well i can now understand why there are so many uninsured drivers driving round!! They bump insurance premiums up on the honest people who actually abide by the law and buy car insurance but surely by doing this they are only encouraging other people to think twice about actually insuring their vehicles when the premiums are the extortionate rate they are now!! My insurance this year at this rate (after checking 3 different comparison websites) is still going to cost more than the car is actually worth!!!!!0

Last year - £368
This year - £548
It's a 6 year old diesel SEAT hatchback. I've not moved address or had any accidents or convictions or claims or anything. Haven't changed jobs or circumstances. I have 8 years NCB.
How the HELL can it go up nearly £200 ?????
As stated above, I can well understand why there are so many uninsured cars on the road. It's daylight robbery!0 -
A couple of years ago my car, a Freelander, was stolen and recovered. I was insured at the time by Direct Line and it went into UK Assistance directly from the police compound. There was no damage to the vehicle but as the keys were stolen the insurance company decided to have new locks fitted.
EIGHT AND A HALF WEEKS later I got the car back.
In March this year I was hit from behind by another car whilst I was stopped at a junction. The other driver admitted full liability and I agreed to go through his insurance company. Lloyds TSB, for the repair. Lo and behold my car went back to the same branch of UK Assistance for some minor bodywork repairs to the rear end & door.
3 weeks later I collected my car from UK Assistance, only to notice the next day that they had fitted the trim from a pre-2004 vehicle to my 54-plate Freelander, making it look like a "cut & shut". Finally, this Monday (2nd August) they collected my car and took it back in to have the correct parts fitted, and to look at the central locking that has been playing up ever since it came back from the repair in April.
They brought my car back to work in the afternoon (after taking it on a round trip of 87 miles) with the new trim hanging off from the rear door and only half the parts affixed claiming that again, they had been sent the wrong parts from Land Rover. They also claimed that the central locking was "a common fault on Land Rovers of this age" and, despite their three year guarantee on the new locks fitted in 2008, they would not do anything about it.
I have had a locksmith look at the rear door lock and he has confirmed that the lock barrel does not match the key. I can only assume that UK Assistance did not replace this barrel back in 2008 when they claimed (and charged) that they had done as the key that I now have is not capable of opening the door lock.
I have also since found out that the parts that have been used for the repair are not Land Rover genuine parts, they are cheap Chinese imports sourced from places such as e-bay (They also replaced my original vinyl rear wheel cover that was undamaged with a cheap & tacky fabric import that looks awful).
I feel that UK Assistance is in some way involved in a cartel-style scam with the Insurance companies whereby they are charging them for repairs that are not done and parts that are both incorrect and not genuine and the insurance companies are passing these costs back to their customers.
This needs further investigation and I am taking my case up with the local Trading Standards Office.
... quick update - I've now got Rochdale Trading Standards involved. They are looking at the whole matter of the removal (theft) of customers genuine undamaged car parts (and possible resale) and replacement with cheap knock off imports, whilst charging for unnecessary genuine parts, which in turn bumps up the Car Insurance Premiums for the ordinary motorist like you and me.
Anyone with any similar experiences might want to contact either myself or Peter Gallagher at Rochdale Trading Standards. (peter.gallagher@rochdale.gov.uk)
I'll keep the forum posted on developments !0 -
