The length doesn't matter. PCI-E is designed to allow you to plug any speed card into a socket that in theory supports higher speeds. It looks like the card you have is x8 speed but the slot supports up to x16.
Have you tried another slot? I can see you have 2 more full length slots. As the card you have only needs x8 speed anyway there is no reason you need to use the top slot.0 -
i thought that card would be recognised in device manager without changing bios or installing drivers.
i am reluctant to uninstall internal graphics drivers or set bios to pcie incase i then have no graphics and can't go back. in the worst case senario i am assuming i could remove mb battery or force bios back to defaults?
i haven't yet tried apennysaved suggestion to enable multi graphics
the card was bought from ebay and sold as new other as the card wouldn't fit in the sellers case. it arrived in the orginal packaging but didn't include any software. it didn't show any signs of being used
i am using pc atm to write this but will try a different slot at some point today"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -

update:
have tried a different slot - no display
have enabled multi graphics in bios - no display/card not in device manager
have tried to download geforce experience/drivers - geforce can't detect gpu
i am not convinced the card is dead but think it maybe a win10 issue
if i uninstall internal graphics driver in divice manager will windows load a driver when i reboot?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -
Can you see anything relating to the new card in the BIOS? (Check the BIOS with and without the card and see if there are any differences). If no then it's not a W10 issue; if yes then it might be.0
